As a Toshiba user, I'm pushing three years with this Satellite C55-A. It was super cheap, but I've bumped the RAM up to 16GB, changed the HDD to a SDD, and upgraded the battery. I think I have another two years left, or at least, until this i3 chip dies. I think Toshiba is great, but you will have to upgrade if you want to extend the life of it (but it wasn't that expensive for me).

Fedora Xfce Works like a charm. I love it. It's my workstation distro.

Xfce in general is pretty awesome; rock solid and fast. I hope the GTK3 transition will go on smoothly and without hiccups like we had with KDE4, but I doubt devs will do a whole big revolution like we had in KDE

Really? Intel collaborates with the Linux kernel and they even made a great Linux distribution: Clear Linux. Highly optimized and great for servers and workstations, their display drivers have always been the most efficient and the first to implement new OpenGL features as well as being open source, meanwhile AMD has only started caring about Linux a while ago and only after Valve took Linux gaming seriously. Now they want a piece of the gaming cake. Why do you say Intel is bad regarding free software?

Clear Linux clearly wins on most benchmark out there. I might consider using it as main desktop if my frequently used packages are in the repo.

and when it comes to nVidia, one has to admit that their Linux support was consistently solid over many years, maybe no cutting-edge features available, but when you bought a new graphics card you was practically sure that it's going to work under Linux
