I have to admit, I wish I had used Xfce originally if I thought about going to a window manager. GNOME is a great integrated experience in that all of its pieces work very well with each other. But using them separately is a little trickier. Xfce on the other hand is very pluggable and I'm using a lot of small pieces of Xfce in i3 even. I think Xfce is nice in that if you decide you want to change to something else later, it's still possible to keep things you really like without bundling it with the rest of the desktop environment.

So if indecisive, I would suggest just sticking with Xfce until you are decisive. :D
