Hmm. That's so weird. Do you have a USB drive? I suppose you could try booting up via flash memory to check the SMART status of the drive.

It is, but the difficulty depends on have you partitioned your hdd with lvm or not (if not, you'll wait a repartition process a long time). Anyway, what do you need to do is repartition your main partition: free some space for your future /home, then format your new partition, then add to fstab, create there a /home dir and remap your user's directory.

You mean, to have have /home and system as separated partitions? No, it's not really possible. You may try with a bootable USB stick but you may end destroying the whole thing. I would rather recommend to do a fresh install.
