I use NAS at home for photographs, music doesn't take that much and I use spotify most of the time either wayof course the more space the better, but I am able to somehow work with that old, tiny SSD
once it was a problem, when I was on a yocto workshop it was not enough and I had to compile yocto on an external HD connected over USB

I've never used Mate for longer so I don't know how it will behave, but knowing it is rooted in Gnome2 which allowed for fairly painless changing of window managers I guess it can be done, now whether you'll like tiling window managers or not is a separate ieda, but you have to try for yourself ;)
Years ago it was possible to change window managers in Mate. But back in the moment it was also possible in KDE.
