Linux has low enough market share that virus writers usually don't target Linux beside some occasional proof-of-concepts, which are harmless
+ there are certain safeguards, like SELinux, which may provide some degree of protection against some viruses

both of which are just as dangerous on Linux as they are somewhere else, though the exploit part is more or less covered by SELinux, in the future maybe sandboxing from Flatpaks

Userspace applications can do what userspace applications can do. Calling for ex. a cryptolocker a virus is a bit exaggerated. It does, what it's supposed to do, you have executed it, so you take the responsibility for your encrypted user account. The others don't get infected.
So yeah you can get a 'virus'
Wayland allows for sandboxing so... maybe use that

Michał

Isn't Wayland's sandboxing only the windowing system? So you cannot access contents of other windows, but the underlying application doesn't have to be sandboxed at all - but yeah, it's also very important and missing in X

User separation is strong enough, the problem is, how we use user separation is not how we should use it.
You should really create a separate user per application like Android does, so that it can't write and read other app's config files.
Who does that tho...
Ohhh and if you do that, don't use ubuntu, ubuntu allows read access to all user homepoints.
The biggest problem is actually X because as you said, apps can intercept a hella lot of things.

I have a capsule coffee machine and have never purchased official (Nespresso) capsules.
There are LOTS of third party brands. It's illegal trying to block those. They used to carry a DRM chip like HP cartdriges. France ruled them illegal in the EU.

Michał

Not even mentioning that this is just a business model, where the coffee machines are cheaper than cost of their production, what is amortized by the capsules cost, just like in case of game consoles

Michał

there are refillable coffee machnes as well, but twise as expensive as the manufacturers business model doesn't take capsules into account

Not machines. Capsules.
Nespresso compatible capsules. Refillable.

It's the same stupid argument as 'but you can use nouveau'. Yeah of course I can, but guess what, your shitty machine and it's docs doesn't tell me what kind of commands it takes so it's basically poking around in the dark, living on the moon.
I tried to refill my ink for the printer, the chip detected the refill and now the printer is dead (Canon MP240) only prints stripes.
How is that not restricting me? Sure I can build a workaround for that, but that's a waste of time, it's a restriction. Until the workaround is built, the printer is already 30 years old and obsolete and I wasted 30 years just because your shitty tanks have that stupid chip.

Michał
31.05.2017
10:45:01
You've bought a cheaper printer which didn't allow for refills, so you've got what you paid for. I agree it is bad, but there's a reason why industrial printers which can be refilled all you want cost what they cost - because then the manufacturer doesn't make money on refills.
don't like it - vote with your wallet

Now we need the same for printers etc
