on the other hand I just use a cheap acer netbook because I'm not a stupid monk that is unable to increase the touchpad touch sensitivity. Yeah there's actually such a thing even on synaptic touchpads.
Even though, I'd recommend going with the original, Elantech. 4 finger gestures like rotate, zoom, swipe between pages etc, filter areas, continue cursor movement on edges etc
it surely detects more than four fingers but that's what the official driver configures by default and you won't really use more than 4 fingers for gestures anyway
And most importantly, it detects if you put your hand onto it and disables itself, so that you don't hit the touchpad when typing

I used Unity (but the older one, built on Compiz) for a short time and it was nicely thought out and pretty good performance wise, was buttery smooth where gnome3 was sometimes lagging

It does too on Gnome - whenever i maximize it chromium doesnt get it and flickers the size difference like crazy and in screenshots it cuts out the maximized part. Its really annoying.

Open Source is basically an invitation for companies to create software that has an open core but it's main functions are completely proprietary, like Android and it's GApps suite.
It doesn't define any moral guidelines, it's just there to create a benefit for companies, even to those that don't care about freedom at all.
LG for example.

Open Source is just a method of software development.
It doesn't actually define that this software has to be 'free' in the terms of freedom.
The Android Project is 'Open Source' but you can't use it for any purpose, you have to get a certification to use the product anywhere, you can't really change it either, because it contains lots of proprietary parts that are important and deeply integrated into the core that will just stop working when changing anything.
There's also no freedom of redistribution, because the Android system contains patented codecs and other stuff that prevent you from redistributing it if you don't buy a license
Also, freedom doesn't mean that there are no rules.
Freedom has to be given, it's not there by default.
A society without rules wouldn't have freedom, they would restrict each other because they don't have rules on how far exactly their freedom reaches.

Closed source apps = proprietary software which control the users, track him etc. You could find examples with explanation in stallmn official site (google, adobe, intel, linked-in)

Meruso

And no, using a free software license is not bound to 'slavery' or copyleft. There are other compatible licenses that do not enforce copyleft.

Michał
30.05.2017
09:58:52
also Android is redistributed pretty widely, like in a OSes which are based on it, so I guess it's not forbidden

Meruso
30.05.2017
10:00:18
However, using a license alone, doesn't define moral guidelines.
The GPLv3 can successfully prevent proprietary parts to be directly implemented into the code, but it cannot decide on whether or not you track your users.
That's why you have declare something as a free software project so that your contributors understand the moral guidelines attached to it.

source on the Android Certification part?
https://www.android.com/gms/partners/
Basically what this means, without the cert they can't grant you access to the Play Store and it's not Android anymore and basically useless.
The cert requires the inclusion of Play Store, Books, Movies, Maps, YouTube, Google Chrome etc.
Devices without the cert can't access the store even if the user decides to install it afterwards
Without GMS most apps don't even start

Or was.

Michał

I also don't get what's wrong with open core. For example GitLab provides Community Edition, which is awesome, and EE, which is closed source and paid, and I don't see anything wrong with that
of course I would prefer EE to be open source, but when presented with having an excellent product like that or not at all, I prefer open core

Meruso
30.05.2017
10:09:25
If you want to use the AOSP product in any meaningful way, you're bound to these restrictions set by Android, because that's the actual product. This is immoral and only a thing happening with 'Open Source'

Michał
30.05.2017
10:10:21

Meruso
30.05.2017
10:10:55
Yeah, partially. It includes proprietary code and patented codecs which you aren't free to redistribute
so at the end you'd have to make a fork first and take the kernel apart

Michał
30.05.2017
10:11:22
and patented codecs is not a problem in the EU.

Meruso
30.05.2017
10:14:58
It actually is a problem in the EU.
Huawei is unable to rollout some android updates to europe because the codecs need licenses.
The Chinese market always gets it the fastest because those patents are invalid there.
Anyway, is there some way of browsing the git repo on a phone? I'm currently not at home

Gwindor

There are git clients for Android, both GUI and CLI.
I use CLI git utility.
