It's a lot of fun, you'll like it. I recommend immediately flashing it with NodeMCU to get LUA in there, then use ESPlorer to play with it

well, just an atmega but with all the bullcrap eliminated, so you don't have to think about doing your own PCB design, using an programmator etc as everything is done, you even have an IDE available to make start as painless and smooth as possible whether you've did embedded programming before or not

it's just as stupid as buying 'capsule' coffee machines whose vendors will stop supplying the proprietary capsules after some time. You've bought this machine but you aren't allowed to make your own capsules because of 'copyright' so you have to throw that machine away. So you get a regular filter coffer machine that can use regular filters or self-made ones and people ask you "You have to do WHAT with the coffee filter? Fold it? How insane!"
