what if homework is supposed to be on windows forms + C++? What if homework is supposed to be on tableau, what if homework is supposed to be on ASP. You see that is what happened with me. Best part was i never really did as they wanted it. Anyways i managed of course the hardway but the way i liked it.

I've once got into the opposite situation. We had a cource on algorithms and data structures using C language. Our tutor highly recommended us to use gcc + valgrind (which equals to having GNU\Linux environment somehow). Also, we had a testing server to check our solution with gcc. So we actually had no choice but to use dualboot or set up a VM with gnu\linux image. Otherwise it was almost impossible to write a code, that passes every test.

In my group just a few people had used GNU\Linux before and it was rather stressful for the others
