Android runs on Linux. It is a Linux distro.
𝚂𝚑𝚊𝚢𝚊𝚗
ok
Camarada Gato
𝚂𝚑𝚊𝚢𝚊𝚗
Alpine Linux is a GNU/Linux Distribution
𝚂𝚑𝚊𝚢𝚊𝚗
such as ubuntu, fedora, etc.

and android
𝚂𝚑𝚊𝚢𝚊𝚗
Chungy
Android doesn't have GNU either
Chungy
In both cases, it's the same kernel, you're free to run chroots running GNU. I do that on my phone all the time with a Debian chroot.
𝚂𝚑𝚊𝚢𝚊𝚗
then chroot to android from debian If you can
𝚂𝚑𝚊𝚢𝚊𝚗
of course you can't. because android is not like alpine or ubuntu or anything.
Yes the kernel is same. but ...
Chungy
You can. Even the unofficial MCPE-on-Linux project basically does exactly that to get the game working.
𝚂𝚑𝚊𝚢𝚊𝚗
dude
Eris
just take the L man
Chungy
Linux can run Linux binaries and cares not where they come from. Whether it's GNU or Android or Alpine. They're independent OSes built on top of a common kernel.
Chungy
and honestly Alpine and Android have more similarities with each other than they do with GNU. They both use musl, for example.
Chungy
Still, on the question of what's an OS...
I don't think it's reasonable to separate a kernel from a whole OS and still claim it's the same thing. If you replace the ReactOS kernel with the Windows kernel, or vice-versa. It's really something that isn't supposed to exist in combination. Both and neither.
Of course, the kernel raises that question because it's such a critical component of an operating system. We'd probably all be more comfortable if notepad.exe was the item of question. "Oh yeah it's ReactOS with the Windows Notepad" (or vice versa)
Chungy
though I guess with Notepad, you could also just place it into C:\Program Files\Windows Notepad\notepad.exe and not replace the actual OS-provided copy. :P

Fun fact: Windows 3.11 + MS DOS is not a multitask operating system, but is multi window at same time.
Chungy
Windows 3 absolutely is multitasking, if you run it in enhanced mode.
Chungy
Windows 3.1 is cooperative multitasking only. Windows for Workgroups 3.1x did alter it to be kind of preemptive, since it runs a hypervisor to support DOS, Win16, and Win32 VMs at the same time.
Camarada Gato
Chungy
Win16 programs basically have to volunteer CPU time to other applications, hence cooperative.
DOS and Win32S programs are preemptively paused by the OS kernel.
Chungy
WfW 3.11 isn't all that different from how Windows 95 does it, only that Win32S isn't installed by default.
Chungy
That's not even too far off from NT's subsystems, but it's more limited and only three of them ever existed.

I believe that the TSR only requires a memory extender, to be able to manage virtual memory.
Chungy
more of a gross hack than something DOS was actually designed for
Chungy
TSRs can work entirely in conventional memory. They do what their name says: terminate and stay resident.
"Terminate" so that DOS returns to the command prompt and the single-process nature of the OS is apparently maintained. "Stay resident" so that actual executable code remains in memory and stays active; the program conveniently "forgot" to remove it and DOS has no memory protection whatsoever.
Camarada Gato
Virtual memory is not swap, is address conversion.
In virtual memory, programs don't acess physical addresses, but virtual addresses.
Once the CPU's protected mode is accessed, the virtual memory is already working.
Chungy
I never said swap. virtual memory requires an 80286 at minimum and TSRs absolutely were made for and worked on 8088 systems.
Chungy
They abuse DOS's lack of memory protection.
Camarada Gato
Chungy
for practical purposes, DOS programs didn't do virtual memory.
Windows does, but not DOS.
Chungy
Windows 3 "enhanced mode" requires a 386 for the virtual memory manager to work. 3.0 still had a real mode, but 3.1 requires a 386 at minimum, enhanced mode is all that exists in 3.1
Chungy
it was nearly already a 32-bit OS... but most programs were only 16-bit. Some exceptions when Microsoft released Win32S, but the "S" stands for "Subset" and so not much was really targeted nor worked for it.

But what if it's XP 64 🤔
who actually uses xp 64 bit? i hear almost all xp supported drivers are for 32 bit and 32 bit drivers dont work on xp 64 bit. also wasnt xp 64 bit just for testing or for limited hardware because microsoft didnt want to wait until vista was ready to create a 64 bit edition of windows. vista was really the first 64 bit windows. i doubt theres any xp supported software thats 64 bit only. also fun fact: xp 64 bit was released in 2005. macos tiger was released in 2005 and is 32 bit based, macos leopard was released in 2007 and is 32 bit based. the first 64 bit based macos release was snow leopard in 2009. i dont know why apple waited for a few years longer especially after bragging all the way back in 2003 about making the worlds first 64 bit computer on the market.

All the Apple talk is irrelevant here :P

Nope, same April 2014 date.

Nope, same April 2014 date.
i tried installing 64 bit xp and was required to put in a product key but i didnt when i tried xp 32 bit service pack 3 but maybe the 64 bit edition i had wasnt the latest service pack
Chungy
XP32 SP3 removed the product key requirement. No such change happened to XP64, the latest service pack of which is 2 (same SP2 as Server 2003)
Chungy
Still, support for XP both 32- and 64-bit ended on the same date.

Chungy
no big surprise.

no big surprise.
all the hacktivators i could find were for vista and newer but thankfully i found a way to disable the timer in the registry
Chungy
it's not the same OS
Chungy
XP32 is NT 5.1, XP64 is NT 5.2
Chungy
XP64 effectively got the same SPs and hotfixes as Server 2003
Chungy
sort of like how Vista and 2008 are the same and used the same update files
KuboF
I know that in FLOSS space it is often hard or unable to set it, but...
how it looks now about release date of 0.4.15?

apparently the reactos installer doesnt freeze on the partition screen on my hp 15-db0088ca and it instead just lacks the ability to convert gpt to mbr so i had to do it manually in macos disk utility. everything was going good until it rebooted after installing and said open hive file failed. i wish the installer had ntfs or exfat format support instead of just fat32 and btrfs. i had to pick between being able to allow macos and windows to view the files or not having a 4gb file size limitation.
