Temmie
gonna respect the vista community
Chungy
Is there a "Vista community"?
Temmie
there are some folks apparently
Petrus
but wasn't Vista too unstable to do daily usage?
hacker12455
the main problem was people putting it on shit hw
Temmie
also shit drivers from shit oems
Petrus
I remember some friend of me to replacing Vista with XP in his new laptop of then
Temmie
also shit drivers from shit oems
and shit ms policy with "vista capable" hardware that only had 512 mb of ram
Petrus
And stores showing the banner "We recommend Windows Vista". Suicidal. 🤣
Temmie
4 gb of ram as minimal is actually a good move from modern ms
Chungy
Vista RTM had quite a few rough edges, especially in app backwards compatibility. SP1 basically fixed all user visible issues.
Chungy
It was rushed and they should have waited until the Windows Server team thought it was ready. SP1 brought major architectural changes to bring it in line with 2008
Chungy
Poor launch reputation couldn't be repaired without renaming the whole OS to 7
Chungy
W7 is pretty much Vista SP3
Temmie
they did some noticeable changes to make it look like its not vista
Temmie
like the superbar
Temmie
btw i dont get people who prefer pre reset longhorn to vista
Temmie
that thing has gotten so bad that ms had to start from scratch
Temmie
yet there are people who say that its superior because of those killer features that never became usable
Petrus

But nowadays, even opensource browsers are bloated
Kirn
How would you adress that much on 32bit?
Physical Address Extensions. Linux has done it for years.
Kirn
Requires Pentium Pro or newer.
So basically every x86 CPU you will ever have hopes of running code on at this juncture? Not a problem!

Hello ReactOS folks. I was trying to get an old Dell XPSOne 24 working. Linux builds do everything but the NVidia card. React OS gets the Video Card working but no Network connections. So Broadcom Wireless (US) WLAN Card v.4.170.25.14 , A00 and the Intel 82567 GLCI/LCI 1000 NIC, v.9.51.4.0, A01 both do not work. And I have had no luck finding drivers. This thing might make its way to the dump. Unless anyone know a good Linux distro that supports nVidia NV9P-GS, v.7.15.11.7529, A00
Victor
Intel NIC should have a driver
Victor
As for wireless networking, it is not supported on reactos at all
Merle
I can't find an Intel 82567GL
Victor
Physical Address Extensions. Linux has done it for years.
Yeah, but what's the point of it in 2021

I have tried the Dell XP Provided Driver off the Service Tag. No Luck. Is there a trick to it?
Julio
And search one by te compatible id
Julio
I found drives for my HP laptop compatible with reactos using the pci id
Julio
An older driver but that worked
Merle
is ReactOS 32bit or 64bit?
Merle
And sorry the Dell downloads are Vista or Win7 - so searching XP
Merle
Oh christ the Lenova XP driver worked. Perhaps I'll do a complete install and do those drivers right away. As now I need to update things... Thoughts?
Merle
DellXPS up and running - put network driver into it right away. But tons of other errors.. unknown devices etc... so gotta figure out how to automatically update maybe. How do you automatically update the thing? lol...
Julio
Update what?
Julio
You'll better install the last nightly build to avoid these errors
hacker12455
there are 64 bit builds but they aren't as stable as 32 bit ones
Merle
Update what?
No drivers for devices I guess. Not errors. Some I know what they might be like it will say Firewire, or Integrated WebCam. But there are a Ton of unknown devices. So I was wondering if there was an Update function (like Windows Update).
Julio
Every device should have its own compatible driver, as said, those made for older versions
Julio
Always search by the pci id
Merle
No, there is no such function
How do I chase down all these drivers needed? or even figure them out. Many say "Unknown Device"
Julio
Look in the inner details
Julio
Search the hardware id
Julio
Google that hardware
Merle
inner details? How do I get the hardware ID?
Julio
There a ton of websites that crawl drivers around
Julio
Are you using the device manager?
Merle
yes - device manger
Julio
Ok, double click on every unknown device
Julio
Details tab
Julio
There you go
Julio
Why would KeWaitForSingleObject return 0x102?
Julio
STATUS_TIMEOUT
Julio
It's weird, but is crashing hiawatha
Merle
27 of them lol. This is 1st unknow device
Julio
27 of them lol. This is 1st unknow device
Start googling those that start with pci
Julio
Will be more easy to find
Julio
Advice: if possible, do not use driver installers, they very likely will make crash reactos
Julio
Instead figure out how to extract only the needed files
Julio
And install your driver using the buttons in device applet
Julio
That will increase your chances of success
Merle
Just wondering if this is worth my time lol. A Pi is $50 bucks. This is an old DELL XPS - POS
Merle
This might be a colossal waste of time. Wine browser doesn't even display simple web pages well.
Merle
Which exact model is that?
Well technically its a Dell XPS One 24 but I replaced the One with POS (Piece of Shit). It blew up long ago when Win7 went unsupported. So lots of errors/bad pop ups etc. I'm just trying to get it alive for a Trade Show Display
Petrus
I don't think it's a bad hardware, if it costed you almost nothing (how much?)
Merle
Was neighbors. Its 12 yrs old lol. I'm just playing around mostly. I installed the Broadcom Wireless 32bit. Said it installed. Nope... No wireless lol... I just wish there was a Linux Distro that supported the nVidia NB9P-GS - I'd be done long ago lol...
Petrus
Try the nouveau driver, it's something
Merle
Linux can't get installed. So can't even get to a default screen/terminal. Hangs on video. Which Linux has a default Nouveau?

Most Linux support free drivers: nouveau (nvidia) and radeon (ATI). Maybe that hardware is too specific to be usable only on Windows OS
