I assume both mint and pop give same performance
Chungy
So is crossover free?
Probably also worth noting that you can install it in a trial mode so you can figure out if you like it or not (or if it even runs your stuff)
Anas
Although I don't know which one I should choose
Anas
Anas
Also what on earth is a lutris?
Chungy
Apparently an open source Steam-ish game launcher.
Anas
Oh
Anas
That blows my mind
Anas
Wait a minute, is steam proton not a proprietary thing made by valve?
Anas
Is it also open source?
Chungy
It's made by Valve, open source. It's basically Wine with a few bits like dxvk and Steam integration also.
Anas
Oh
Chungy
They keep the same version numbers as Wine so it's easy to tell where it's at
Anas
So anyone can take it and try it without installing steam

Petrus
I use Linux Mint for daily work, it's quite decent to run and has a lot of software avalaible through PPAs (also snapd, but I won't recommend that)
Anas
PPA?
Petrus
3rd party repositories
Anas
Oh
Anas
Ever tried pop?
Petrus
No, never
Anas
Why never
Petrus
I don't know. I'm ok with Mint at work and Void on my personal computers.
Anas
Void is another distro?
Petrus
Yes
Anas
I don't know if I should try mint or pop
Petrus
Mint is how Ubuntu Desktop should have been
Petrus
And you have different desktops to choose: Mate, Cinnamon, XFCE, KDE...
Anas
I like cinnamon
Petrus
(Fuck Gnome3, it's a mess)
Anas
Oh
Petrus
I like Mate
Anas
I heard that pop is better for gaming than mint
Anas
I also saw a meme that said mint is for fetuses
Anas
Not to be offensive
Chungy
Mint and Pop are both based on Ubuntu (which in turn, is based on Debian).
I feel that Mint too often suffers identity crises. It spawned originally as "Ubuntu, but with preinstalled codecs!", then Debian and Ubuntu loosened up and started having all the same codecs.
Then GNOME 3 became a thing, Mint forked it to turn it into more of a traditional desktop (Cinnamon), but also that became part of Debian and Ubuntu.
I don't even know what Mint offers right now that Ubuntu doesn't.
Anas
Um
Anas
So pop is better?
Chungy
Pop is mostly quality of life stuff, nothing too major in honesty, but being developed by an OEM, it has a pretty strong emphasis on being easy to use and pioneered good HiDPI support.
Chungy
You can always try both.
Anas
HiDPI?
Petrus
Petrus
Mint doesn't use snapd while Ubuntu encourages its use. Snap is a mess, better don't use it, really. Only if there's no other alternative
Chungy
HiDPI?
Monitors with higher resolutions than 100dpi. Usually 160dpi and greater.
Anas
Chungy
Most "4k" monitors are going to be HiDPI, unless it's like 40 inches or more
Petrus
Mint desktops ARE designed to be easy to use, really, I mean it. Even Ubuntu Mate is difficult to use. Mint put effort in showing a "Windows-like" desktop for users who come from Windows
Anas
Yea I've heard of that
Petrus
Mint has an "app store" easy to use, which uses apt as backend
Petrus
Petrus
No other distro has something so easy and useful for end users
Anas
Oh
Petrus
Software updates are easy to manage, too
Petrus
They have put a lot of effort to get a Linux desktop to be usable
Anas
Sounds really good
Petrus
PopOS seems a MacOSX clone, as I'm seeing. I don't see the point because I don't find Finder to be easy to use to most users (who come from Windows)
Petrus
However, try PopOS if you want to.
Chungy
Pop is hardly Maclike :P
Chungy
If you want a Mac clone, you'd get Elementary OS
Petrus
My opinion on Linux Mint is upon 5+ years using it as daily OS
Anas
Petrus
Finder is MacOSX's main desktop interface
Anas
Petrus
Default user interface: GNOME 😵😵
Anas
Anas
Except for that bottom bar
Anas
Oh
Chungy
https://hellosystem.github.io/docs/
Chungy
Super Mac clone
Petrus
Reject anyhing based on Gnome3. It's a too heavy desktop environment and it doesn't provide useful features but eyecandy
Petrus
Chungy
Petrus
Yes, eating so much candy is bad for health. So is Gnome in comparison 😜
Chungy
GNOME is pretty explicit about trying to be the cheerios of DEs. Boring and out of your way.
Petrus
Mate is a fork of Gnome 2.x, when it still was a proper desktop environment to work with. Is my main desktop in every distro I use
Anas
So, after installing Linux, should I get any software like IObit driver booster that can download all drivers for me?
Chungy
I never heard of that, but in general Linux has all hardware drivers built in already. Main (nearly only) exception is the nvidia driver.
