Lol, is it not possible to make ReactOS the base then slap KDE or Gnome as a desktop environment?
✝️ ☺️🌞 HD Scania
Is it Wyne OS or Wayne OS?
It's from WyneOS
Anas
A Linux distro that wants to be Windows
Anas
But what is it based on? Arch? Debian?

Vishwareya Kumari
Looks like I am here to learn a lot of things
Anas
Abhineet
Anas
You're Indian, aren't you?
Anas
Don't get me wrong, just asking
Chungy
Lol, is it not possible to make ReactOS the base then slap KDE or Gnome as a desktop environment?
KDE has a Windows port. You'd have to port GNOME first though.
Anas
KDE on windows?
Chungy
Yeah
Anas
How is that even possible?
Anas
Doesn't windows use it's own desktop thing
Chungy
Why wouldn't it be?
Chungy
For the full DE, you replace explorer for plasma as the shell
Chungy
If you don't want that, individual applications are trivial. Most of GNOME is already ported in that fashion; what's not is the shell
Anas
Oh, you mean explorer.exe?
Chungy
Hmm?
Aman Pinto
KDE port based on what?
Aman Pinto
Windows itself?
Chungy
Based on KDE? I don't understand your question.
Chungy
KDE has been ported to Windows, that's all.
Tobiyo
Windows itself?
kde can run on windows is what they saying, so can make a reactos distro with kde already
Tobiyo
tho I wonder how well that would work
Anas
Guys I have a question
Anas
Is it possible to run your own windows apps through steam proton Linux?
Anas
I mean apps that you didn't download from steam itself
Chungy
Yes. It's generally easier to just use normal wine.
Anas
Oh
Anas
Is installing wine easy?
Chungy
Usually yes.
Anas
What do you mean
Chungy
https://wiki.winehq.org/Download
Anas
So its different for different versions of Linux huh
Chungy
It's packaged for different distros. They have different base libraries.
Chungy
CrossOver is excellent too, they have a bunch of apps that are guarantees to run and the whole thing makes things easy.
Anas
Dude I have a BIG question
Chungy
CrossOver is similar to Proton in that it's a commercial offering of Wine, but CrossOver aims for more of a general use rather than Proton being about hiding it behind Steam
Anas
If I install POP OS on my PC now and install steam and enable proton and then add non steam windows apps or games to it and then launch it, will they work?
Chungy
I've never tried to mess with Steam on that level. It should be possible.
Anas
So crossover needs you to pay money?
Chungy
Yeah. You can just use regular Wine for free.
Anas
I wonder if there is a distro where steam is pre installed and proton is pre enabled
Chungy
It's called SteamOS
Anas
Yeah. You can just use regular Wine for free.
Whats in crossover that they charge for it?
Chungy
Whats in crossover that they charge for it?
What you get: an easy GUI to manage installs, menus, file extension associations. A few applications like the Adobe Suite and Microsoft Office are guaranteed to never break in it. What they get: Codeweavers has all the principle Wine developers as full time employees, so it financially supports them.
Anas
So is crossover free?
Chungy
No
Anas
I checked their website, 15 dollars
Anas
16 actually
Anas
So dude, if I'm installing Linux for the first time ever, should I go with SteamOS or POP OS?
Chungy
If you only want to play games and they primarily come from Steam, SteamOS wouldn't hurt.
Chungy
If you want to do anything else also, install Pop and then install Steam on it
Anas
Oh
Anas
So SteamOS is a gaming console like OS for PC huh
Chungy
Yes
Anas
What about Linux mint vs pop OS?
Chungy
I like Pop better.
Petrus
Linux Mint is fine
Anas
Man choosing between distros is hard
