Iirc, they added an abstraction layer for audio which increased latency and removed the possibility to use eax/a3d and similar things. Also, vista had problems with audio resampling, sometimes playing an audio sample with a sampling frequency different from the one set for the audio card made horrible sounds (BTW, this was fixed in 7, I don't know in vista sp1)

Also, access to hw midi changed
