why don't sysadmins use the ordinary programming lang like python and ruby

why don't sysadmins use the ordinary programming lang like python and ruby
I guess they do, but for some simpler stuff bash is always there to use

Vitalii

what programming language is this ?
Just a Bash variable. :)

Vitalii
27.06.2017
11:41:45
And bash is widely installed on servers, while there could be neither python (2.7, 3?) nor ruby.

Justin
27.06.2017
11:42:43
Because bash is all you need
Heh, it's funny this comes up. I just wrote a script in Python and I asked a few people for review before I run it in my infrastructure, and some people said, "You can do this in one line with sed in a command line." Oops… ?

Eduard
27.06.2017
11:42:44
It's fast, portable and there is no need to install anything

Red_hat

make sense, but learning a whole new programming language isn't that fun but it seems the preferable choice after all

Michał
27.06.2017

I guess you could as well write in perl using 10 characters like $*@#(()) but I doubt it will be a better solution

perl
and? ;)

Eduard
27.06.2017
11:45:26
Well, there are several things: normally you start using bash just concatenating several commands, that's not a language at all. Then you will begin to need heavier stuff like conditionals and loops, at the end you're programming in bash

Justin

I gave it as an example why sometimes shorter solution is not a better one because it's not readable at all for anyone else besides someone who wrote it + some magicians

perl is awesome for quick hacks and file manipulation, once anything as complicated as hashmaps enter the stage I consider switching to something nicer... ;)

I think Perl's main problem is in the amount of shortcuts you can take to do a lot of stuff, it is its strenght when you want to hack something up quickly but reading code where a few of those shortcuts are taken is a pain
