vim (and vi) have modes, so you have a normal mode where you use : to indicate that you want to enter a command; there's also insert mode where you enter text into a file and can use : like any other key

I think there are many reasons. One of them is the fact that you're conditioned with Windows in schools, bought computers and wherever, what means that everything is made to work with Windows, you see Windows everywhere, everyone uses it so you assume it's the default

or you get a mac as it's "the other computer"

Interesting, if I were a programmer probably would find it useful, however when I use nano is mostly for simple boring config file modification stuff
