It's wiser to give the beginners what they need, not what they want
Linux and GUI = false friends

Michał
23.05.2017
06:32:26
but if you force many of them to use the CLI instead of GUI, they will leave... ;) I prefer CLI as well, but let's be honest, GUI is more friendly for first-time user most of the time

Find your desktop's package manager in your start menu and search for package name then click install on the right package. Much more typing.

Google

Gwindor
23.05.2017
06:33:59
And now using Finch or telegram-cli for Telegram?

Bloo

apt install package
Much easier.

06:35:01

Gwindor
23.05.2017
06:35:24
Much easier.
At first, you do: apt search package_name and then scroll through a possibly long list to copy a name of package and then you do apt install package_name

Michał
23.05.2017
06:35:46
at first, you have to know what to type

Gwindor
23.05.2017

CLI knowledge in Linux is highly encouraged, but enforsing it would make it less nice for people who migrate from Windows to use.

Bloo
23.05.2017
06:36:09
There's a valid reason why folk prefer it though, especially when helping others. It gets the job done more quickly and certain.

Gwindor
23.05.2017
06:37:13
I don't see why someone shouldn't use GUI for package manager if they want to.

Usually if the fix for a problem takes too much time or effort, a newbie will give up easily. The faster and surely the problem can go away the better for everyone.

Michał
23.05.2017
06:39:06
if to install an application, something that takes drag and drop on mac, double click on windows, user needs to learn obscure commands and enter them in unappealing black box, then they will give up instantly
imagine you don't have play market on android, but need to do that on a command line on a phone. More efficient, that's for sure

Bloo

06:39:44
Sorry, this is Fedora. rpm install?

Michał
23.05.2017
06:39:54
dnf install
now tell me, how user is supposed to guess it without reading documentation
don't forget sudo

Bloo
23.05.2017
06:40:25
dnf install
Right on. Been a minute since I've used Fedora.

Gwindor
23.05.2017
06:40:32
Hence why Fedora Workstation has Gnome Software Center.

Michał
23.05.2017
06:40:46
and on Ubuntu it's apt-get
do she or he needs to check which distro is installed first

Google

Michał
23.05.2017

GUI and CLI have different user base, and all have its reasons

Admin

When getting help on chat, it's just easier to get'em to open a shell and do a bit of copy/paste for many simple issues, and magically the problem they face vanishes.

Michał
23.05.2017
06:42:46
so if they don't have gimp but would like to install it, they would have to find a support chat, ask there, copy and paste some stuff they have no idea what it does and hope for the best?
repeat next time they need some app, since they won't remember it

Bloo
23.05.2017
06:43:13
Or for family or friends, walk them through the GUI package manager once to install ssh server. ?

Michał
23.05.2017
06:44:01
that's why it's needed to have CLI, but omitting GUI is not wise

Bloo
23.05.2017
06:45:34
Nah. I always make newbies fully aware there's a GUI package manager and that normally they should look there first.
But for fast help with a simple problem I tend to offer copy/paste answers with an explanation of the command.
Drivers and such especially.

Michał
23.05.2017
06:47:28
that's also what I do

Bloo
23.05.2017
06:50:22
Most newbies don't fear the command line as much as many folk seem to think. They just prefer the GUI for most things most of the time. If a fix for an issue they face involves one copy/paste to make a glitch go away, they're most of 'em down for that. Some of them even want to understand the command. ?
What scares them bad is when something breaks the GUI and they're forced to the command line. ?

I spent two weeks stuck at a bash shell one time when mandrake/mandriva broke x.org
Did that by choice though to learn what Linux shell had to offer. Learned a lot.
Found out about fbdev and links and irc from shell
Fun stuff
Vlc and mplayer both support fbdev

Michał
23.05.2017

also, I don't see my mother using a CLI anytime
gui stuff, browser - sure
there are newbies and newbies

For my mum I just had her install ssh and helped her via tunneled vnc.
Once she started knowing where to look for stuff she taught herself a lot more than I expected she would.
