If you have time and a good internet connection, I suggest to you to use the Everything ISO, and start with minimal, then install i3wm (if that will be your choice)

i3 is cool, I have to make a setup with it. But if you don't like the tiling window manager weirdness, then icewm, openbox or pekwm would be my recommendations

icewm - comes with a simple panel; similar to win95 openbox - lightweight but has some features, used in lxde for example pekwm - lightweight, small set of features but allows for grouping windows into tabs
