I personally don't use split panel feature. But if I wanted to, I can still use GNOME Commander or Nemo.

Baby duck syndrome or "imprinting". Then someone sticks to the things they first saw somethere. Like a just borned baby duck can stick to someone they first saw after they hatched from the egg, and think what this is the mother.
For example, first interface you had used was early GNOME 2. But when someone changes the way things working, against you just used to use...
