If you need to control NetworkManager from command line interface, suggest you to install package NetworkManager-tui and run it as nmtui. :)

It is a more convenient ncurses based interface.

Unity wasn't half bad IMHO. It was recognizable, user friendly and ran more smoothly on my x200 than plain Gnome3
