Hi Marc.

Cool! I like your Army.
Isn’t it like that everywhere? After floods or something it’s common to see the army building temporary bridges or something in Poland as well

Kohane
17.04.2017
08:09:19
And I think there's some security benefits too, but it slips my mind
On the bright side, apps are sandboxed in your user folder so if anything goes wrong it will only affect your user instead of the whole system. The downside is huge apps because each programme has to pack everything instead of using what is already available in system.

Marc
17.04.2017
08:09:46
Isn't that also one of the benefits of using docker?

(I am currently making my first steps with docker in production)

Well... yes, and no. In Uruguay they often do that, but in Argentine... they don't bother. Just to mention two countries I know well.

Marc
17.04.2017
08:11:03
what I am struggling with is copy protection (yes, I know...) and electronic licensing ;(

Kohane
17.04.2017
08:11:25

Probably. I'm no fan of flatpak. I use it just because Gnome Recipes comes as flatpak only.

Marc
17.04.2017
08:11:58
yes, it is.

Michał
17.04.2017
08:12:06

You want to protect your own app? You probably won’t win at it, but I would go with licensing server if I’d have to do that

Marc
17.04.2017
08:13:33
we have a very good system right now, but it's no longer applicable in a modern world where you use docker containers and such. we have to completely rethink this part of our software. but yes, it goes into the server direction.

thanks god parts of the system are actually open source ;)

Michał
17.04.2017
08:14:01
then I guess licensing server would be a best fit ;)

Google
Michał
17.04.2017
08:14:30
an docker container would phone home at the beginning and see if there’s a free license available, if yes then cool, if not then refuse to run and that’s it

many applications work that way

Marc
17.04.2017
08:15:31
we would even let the app run if there is no license available, but we want to get notified of the fact.

Michał
17.04.2017
08:15:53
then you can just show a warning to the console and make the licensing server notify you

Marc
17.04.2017
08:15:58
so we can talk to the customer about the reason. it might be a network problem as well.

Michał
17.04.2017
08:16:06
that’s how I would do this ;)

IBM and JetBrains applications work this way, for example

do you have some kind of orchestration service for those, that controls all running instances?

Marc
17.04.2017
08:18:55
yes, we monitor the instances anyway.

we have a provisioning server, which is now being modified to hand out licenses and such.

It's "only" the distance from Helsinki to Yemen ?

09:09:07
25 for gas is crazy cheap then

Gwindor
17.04.2017
09:13:33
Those $25 was for train ticket.

But train from here to Tomsk goes FOURTEEN hours. And you can go by car for three. Why? Crossing Transsiberian railroad and traincar gets locomotives switch, once or twice. Bus cost is about the same, but it's schedule isn't optimal.

And anyway, dad agreed to drop me in Tomsk airport at 8AM.
