You're not alone. It was the same while I lived in Uruguay.

I would rather buy a product here physically, even though they sell it 100$ or more than the original price, than online where I have to pay 22.4% plus

my sim works in .al, but it gets expensive for data roaming. so I don't use it for that. there is wifi everywhere in .al

of course my telco provider is to blame, not albania...

In Italy a free WiFi hotspot is very rare
Even in McDonalds or other fast food joints?

Giuseppe

No, in McDonalds they're asking only for personal data (ID card number, Name, Street, etc.)

I guess goverment regulations. In China you usually have to log in using a phone number (preferably Chinese one), so any usage which breaks the law can be easily traced back to the person who did it

Yeah, but AFAIK many other countries are adopting this as well to "fight terrorism"

I know Poland wants to...

here, at those few wifi hotspots that require login, most of them just show up the password at the login page

all you have to do is put that in the box and click login, that's t

while those hotspots that are provided from mobile providers, require you to send an sms to a special number and you get the password for that wifi for the day

because it changes everyday

Phone number makes sense. But it's so easy to discard a SIM card, that I wouldn't get bothered for that.

In Poland you have to activate disposable SIM cards as well using your ID

but its just a minor inconvenience if you know your way around

you can buy already activated sim cards on auction sites for small money, in plain sight

so here goes another brilliand goverment idea, straight down the drain ?

you can do that here too, or better yet it used to happen some years ago, now people don't mind anymore

someone might go and get free activated numbers using his ID, and hand them out to other people

You still can buy a sim card "under the bridge" here.

But thats illegal.

And you better to buy a phone for it over internet from Ali Express, and not use it with any other sim card to prevent correlation.
