In Linux they may lead to some problems. A 32bits programme will install 32bits dependencies that may clash with the same versions but 64bits. It happened to me a couple of times and ended with a mess and having to wipe everything that it wasn't the my machine's architecture. So I would advise you to be very careful on that aspect.
