But as far as I can tell, Lenovo Thinkpad works perfectly with Linux.
Actually this is the first laptop that properly goes to sleep and hibernate.

This makes more sense.
The conclusion is: Buy any Thinkpad except T580 and T480.
Which is not difficult due to the prices of those machines. They're super expensive.

Come on, guys, you're all pointing at laptops with market values as high as any Mac. You're not making any point.
To get a laptop for development and studies, one doesn't need the brand-new-stuff, just something good that will work everywhere and is cheap. There are many Thinkpads like that, and they're all around 200€ - 350€

High end, well-linux tested machines, with long support times (bios updates ect.) and free firmware as much as possible.

@voiday was surprised at the prices and Luxnote, so I gave my laptop as example and told him more or less what to expect. Then Vitaly jumped to say don't buy these models. That are super expensive models, pointless for a student or junior developer.
That whole thing, @Wolfshappen , was unrelated to the System76 subject, although it derived from it.

I mean, as @michalrud said, one can wait a couple of years and Thinkpads' prices will droop. That always happens. A new batch of laptops come and the previous models go down the price list and become accesible.

Companies buy these in giant batches, sometimes swapping their pcs for all employees at once.
They tend to but them from leasing companies as well and lease them, with support, for 3-5 years.

Keep in mind however they are leasing returns and luxnote while good at sourcing them is bad at refurb. For most models you want the backlit brand new keyboard (optional addon when ordering) and manually putting in new thermal paste (they drop way too much inside) and swapping the hdd/ssd it comes with helps.

No, no, look at the models, they're some 5 years. Those are the models that are not in Lenovo display anymore. But they're not ancient, and they work as new, and have a 1 year warranty. So for all accounts, they're new. Not pipping hot, just came out of the oven, but new enough.
