Uhm. Okay.

Personally I'm not a fan of this kind of simplistic laptop. I'm happy with my Thinkpad.

I need a cheap convertible that runs linux, period.

Rather, I don't want a windows machine

What I do like about my Chromebook is the sound quality. The speakers in particular are great. Much better than the ones in Thinkpad.

Convertible, basically I need something easy to carry around and switch into tablet mode and back

I probably got lucky. But one thing for the other. The memory is ridiculous. Like 4GB or 6GB. Something like that, I can't recall. And obviously, part of it is already taken by the system.

I haven't seen one mac device that's a convertible

Of course, the prices are not comparable. But the quality isn't either. I would always prefer Mac to Chromebook.

Oh. You mean like folding it? Okay, that's not my Chromebook for sure ?

I wouldn't mind that, that I expect, and so can live with, I think.
You don't mind what, lack of memory or sound quality? I've got confused, sorry.

Included keyboard, plus I'm invested in a non apple ecosystem
To me the only point is that Chromebooks are cheap and expendable. Anything over that, I prefer a real laptop.

But, how often do you listen to stuff with the loudspeakers of the laptop?. I personally prefer a pair headphones or ear buds. Even the basic ones sound far better than the best laptop speakers.

MTP is broken on Fedora 28 with KDE. Use JMTP instead as FUSE file system. Install it first: sudo dnf install jmtpfs fuse. Then create directory in your home and mount MTP file system: jmtpfs ~/directory. Unmount: fusermount -u ~/directory.

Most benchmarks are in the insignifcant difference region.

And the few where linux shows a clear winner its usually, well, clear linux (by laughable margins).

gcc version, profiled build or not, globally enabled buuld flags.

Gosh. You can always compile a better version if you really need it.

Tobias?

What is "clear Linux" btw?
Intel decided they could do a faster linux by using profile guided optimization for all their cpus and enabling features that are way newer (thats why clear supports only a narrow, recent range of intel cpus).

And magically with PGO and enabling avx/sse in latest gens the same code is "magically" faster.

Intel strives to make linux builds better for their platform in general.

Hm, years ago ArchLinux claimed it was faster than Ubuntu and others because it was built for i686, not i386

I wouldn't mind some distros optimized for newest CPUs to be honest

If you have giant deployments on specific cpus and all you might get way more speed by optimizing for it but in general usage you'll usually not gain much.

(Exceptions: Databases, Compilers, ect)

Hi, folks! Quick question: Any chance of installing Instagram Desktop on Linux? Or some wrap or whatever that allows me to use Instagram from Linux. It bothers me to boot to Windows every day just for this.

I am wondering how manjaro is winning this most of the time. https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=windows10-october-linux&num=1
I didn't notice an outstanding difference between Manjaro and Fedora when I used them years ago. I always noticed a big difference between Fedora and Debian.
