I don't have a straight answer, but I recommend using a terminal multiplexer such as 'tmux' or 'screen' so your shell sessions will stay alive even when you get disconnected

As far as I know you use rsync to update your mirror. You can use ftp and even wget. The tricky part is getting the index of packages right. Best thing is to use createrepo, but I doubt there is such package in debian. You can download the index from another mirror. But, the index and the content will be missmatched most of the time. I ran a private mirror for a while. I am no expert. But that's why I can say from my experience.
