I just noticed that when I chose an image as wallpaper in Gnome it automatically generates a copy. Why? Is there any chance of avoiding this behaviour? Thanks in advance

most DE do this. It's to ensure that your wallpaper is still there if you delete the original fine. If you for example right click -> set wallpaper in mozilla it gets downloaded into temp which is cleared after restart
