I read something about this on the official NSA best practices on securing Red Hats servers.
Let's say you type a sudo command, and you leave the table without closing screen sesion, since sudo have a 5 minutes no-password request anybody can type whatever they want on the computer.
But if you use su -c, only the command passed thru su -c is the one with root privileges.

Is there a workaround to remove gnome without breaking the whole system?
Why not take a server iso, do a custom install and go for basic desktop. You will have LDM instead of GDM. The pagages of i3 or OpenBox are not intrusive. Then you have a point where you can select a DE of your choice without depending on Gnome. Just an idea that came up for a virtual machine. I wanted gui but not a DE. So went for this route. Later, I set it to only boot on init 3.

Is a shame not having modularity process or work arounds to solve this without having to make a fresh install.

Actually, it is possible to install an remove packages groups collections i.e. Development tools, but uninstalling gnome brake the whole system despite having another DE. So, dnf is not enough intelligent to remove packages without braking the system.
This is why packages or packages groups should be modulars and independents from very low and core basic system.

Why don't you install a spin? If you don't like Gnome it doesn't make sense to have it.
A have read emails from you in which you ask about why if you are using X DE why opening a random file uses the other equivalent app from the other DE, that is because installing a Desktop environment over another existing DE duplicates tools, i.e. have cinnamon and on top of it you install KDE, after this you will end up with 2 file managers (nemo and dolphin)
So been able to remove existing DE before o after install another is useful

Gnome have a lot of dependencies once installed, yes you will be able to uninstall but with consequences. I recommend you install a basic installation without DE
