One of the "related videos" is of a conspiracy theorist linking CERN with Hindu devils, and that CERN was created by people who very well know who created the universe, and are trying to conquer his position.

I learned some , your opinion is more important to me

Jiří

Well, I like Flatpak, but I'm definitely biased because I work for the Red Hat desktop team. I think it's a good way to get software from upstream developers directly to users, but it also has its shortcomings like any other bundling technology.

Kieron

I like Flatpak because I'm not so comfortable with the idea of Canonical pulling the strings. I know Flatpak isn't strictly speaking a RedHat project, but its close too them, and I trust them because they have a history of doing community wide stuff. Instead of specifically for their own distro like Canonical have a habit of doing. Even though they packaged Snappy up for other distros they seem to have caused a negative ripple for themselves by talking about it like other distros had got onboard with it when they hadn't.
I know the latest builds of Gnome software centre have support for Flatpak apps, maybe it will get support for Snaps too at some point, who knows.

If you want to build a project that should be widely accepted across distributions, you need to build it distro-agnostic from the ground up. That's what we've been trying to do with Flatpak. Yes, it's been mostly developed by redhatters, but it's been in an independent environment and everyone has been welcome to contribute from the day 1. We've also spent quite a lot of time talking to upstream projects and other distributions to make sure it satisfies their needs.

And I think snap vs flatpak is not the same situation as deb vs rpm. Because you can't easily install deb on Fedora and vice versa. But you can do that with snap and flatpak. Even though with snap it's limited now because the sandboxing is completely turn off and it requires SELinux disabled on Fedora.

Lesik

15:42:11
Why?
Because different distros have different versions of deps. Arch Linux and Fedora have new deps, Debian and CentOS older ones (as examples). A package for all OS will only work if all deps are packaged into the package, which results in massive redundancy. It is also much more likely to be vulnerable, because if you have only one version of each dep, and the dep has a vulnerability, you update one dep and every software depending on it is fixed. With included deps you have to wait until every software is updated.
Hope it's clear. I'm typing on a tablet and mistyping a lot.

Michael

But it's just a tradeoff. Generally, the use of universal packages at all does not have to be obligatary.

Redundancy is not such a issue, both flatpak and snap can deduplicate. Bundling libraries is a lesser issue with flatpak because it uses shared runtimes, but yeah, it's more demanding for maintenance than having one version of lib in the system, but we also have to say that it has big advantages, too. All apps will never agree on one version of given lib.
