If you installed current, its sources are daily updated.

Currente will be FreeBSD 15, Realease is 14.2, Stable is 14-Stable.
I installed release but I wanted current Right now I'm trying to build from source to upgrade to current Is there any other way to switch to current other than building from source?
Gowen
You can download the newer Current iso/img, update /src and build from there.
Gowen
Have you read de Developer Handbook?
Maxim

why would you only update /usr/src if the whole sets are already on that ISO?.. why download the ISO if you can just download the sets?..
Парса
Is there any way to update from the binaries on the current iso snapshot?
Gowen
Because if you use Release, you don't have the right versions of world, llvm/clang f.ex.; using the last Current can help you with the upgrade because you don't have to compile those tools before. @n4pca said he has a weak device.

tar xvf?
Oh yeah you're right thanks I'll give it a try Btw how up to date are the pkgs built for freebsd current? 14.2 had some outdated packages i.e. niri, telegram desktop, ...
Maxim
also, what's your problem with just building current from source?
Maxim
could take a while
Парса
I have a stronger machine running arch (btw). I was thinking about crass compiling world on that device

Probably days =))
Maxim
so yeah, use the sets, download them from somewhere at ftp.freebsd.org

How regularly do new iso snapshots get built and released? Can I keep my system up to date by regularly downloading latest current iso and extracting it?

they're built, like, twice a month; yes, you can. why would you use an iso instead of just downloading the sets, tho?
Maxim
I mean, I just told you exactly that at least twice in this conversation :) that's okay, tho

Sorry I didn't pay attention. I thought the sets don't get released, also I was checking the pkg repo instesd of the main ftp server

Do I have to do anything else other than just extracting the txz files into my root?

I should technically be able to clone the src on a USB, run buildworld and buildkernel on my stronger laptop and then run installworld and installkernel on my weaker laptop right?
Maxim

kinda; you'll need the /usr/obj directory copied to your weaker one as it contains everything you have just built
Maxim
you can share it via nfs if that could work for you

I only have one ethernet cable right now. I think having a usb would make more sense for now because I don't think I would get faster speeds with wifi I'll give it a try though

eh, the wifi speeds aren't gonna be spectacular with FreeBSD as the wi-fi client, unfortunately still, you already know about the /usr/obj directory
Maxim
is copying only that directory enough or do I need to also copy /usr/src between devices?
I'm guessing you do need /usr/src as it contains the appropriate Makefile`s to perform a `make installkernel && make installworld also, don't forget about etcupdate: it may be useful when tracking CURRENT however, I'd recommend you just use the sets: https://download.freebsd.org/snapshots/amd64/15.0-CURRENT/ let me perform another search regarding the sets, tho

What would you recommend: quarterly or latest?
Maxim
What would you recommend: quarterly or latest?
I'm personally using quarterly as I'm too lazy to update packages once a week or more often
Maxim
once every 3 months is bearable
polyduekes
has xfce 4.20 arrived in quarterly yet
X

Maxim

it's quarterly, which means it gets updates every quarter (of a year), so every 3 months. wait until mid-January, probably
polyduekes
like for stuff like firefox
Maxim
how do i get updates before next quarter then?
they sometimes push some packages from latest to quarterly
Maxim
telegram sometimes gets updated when my Russian colleagues push the committer a bit (he's also Russian)
polyduekes

ah, i thought it is out of maintenance since i get the message about it having no maintainer whenever i install it

My ancient machine is a i3 gen 3 cpu with integrated intel gpu(iirc) , 3 gb ram and i wasnt able to run xfce wayland session. Maybe i missed or forgot something to configure

how can I allow access of mtp/adb devices for non root users?
Emp. Jasmine
If I use my computer for both work and play, have only one computer, and don't want to dual boot is FreeBSD a good choice for me? I'm currently on NixOS, and I use my laptop for Steam gaming (I might start streaming), drawing with a graphics tablet, using it as a media station, web browsing, and "office" tasks (really I do most of that using helix and pandoc).
Emp. Jasmine
I was looking over the BSD documentation because someone was talking about how well written it is, but I don't see much on the use case for gaming and digital art. But the man pages and such for everything are so much better than their Linux counterparts
Emp. Jasmine
NixOS admitted is a documentation nightmare XD
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Best case scenario: run FreeBSD as a virtual machine guest. You can try to match the NixOS setup you have in a host fbsd machine but it will take time, specially finding workarounds for Linux programs and workflows that differ/aren't available in fbsd userland

You can switch to latest https://wiki.freebsd.org/Ports/QuarterlyBranch#How_to_switch_from_quarterly_to_latest
