Mohammed Alnahdi
you should try ghostbsd
Is it supported thinkpad e590?

I will download it now

Marco
Yeah, just some shit I reckon

Gotta be their backdoor
Marco
I heard they work poorly on the BSDs
Mohammed Alnahdi
But I have question in BSD communities, sometimes on linux distributions some of them solve drive and other not, is this found in BSD communities?
Marco
What do you mean?

That may be a font issue. Did you try changing the font?
Mohammed Alnahdi

For example, driver for laptop A work fine in ubuntu but when you go with debian and fedora not working well.

That ought to be better on freebsd as there is only one, but I have no such experiences
Mohammed Alnahdi
Mohammed Alnahdi
@polyduekes did you use ghostBSD?
Mohammed Alnahdi
no
Ok, just I want know if there virtualization tools there.
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Ok
It's FreeBSD based after all

Now I am making bootable usb
a quick friendly advice, try ventoy
polyduekes
it will help your poor usb
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Yes
From memory, 0's ended are intel and 5's ended are amd. Yours from lenovo specs seems 8th gen intel
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
From their specs, worst scenario is intel cpu and amd gpu, which for dedicated direct rendering, it's somewhat a pain
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Realtek wireless card could give some trouble but not sure at all
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
FreeBSD should run fine there. Having to troubleshoot some device/config issues is still a thing I'm afraid, but should be nothing serious in that platform
Nicolás
Hello People! In the distros of GNU/Linux based in Debian/Ubuntu I put in the terminal: sudo apt update -y && sudo apt upgrade -y sudo apt dist-upgrade -y (or sudo apt full-upgrade -y ) ¿How to do the same in FreeBSD?
Mohammed Alnahdi
Mohammed Alnahdi
The fans was very loudly
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Wireless worked fine but the cpu i guess
If you get FreeBSD installed, after setting it up share a log from dmesg here (via a pastebin or similar) so others can have a easier way to diagnose
Mohammed Alnahdi
Ok
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ

Did you set up powerd or powerdxx to CMax lowest, and/or ignoring hardware without present drivers?
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Yes
Interesting. Well feel free to share dmesg and pciconf -lv logs once you get fbsd again on it, and hopefully we'll find a solution. Pretty much sure it has been addressed here before by others too
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
I installed powerd when I installed freebsd, is there different between powerd and powerdxx? https://www.freshports.org/sysutils/powerdxx
powerdxx aims to replace powerd. Depending the platform you may get more benefits staying with powerd. For an intel laptop I'd say powerdxx. Just one rule, you can enable one at a time
Mohammed Alnahdi
Installing ghostbsd took less than 10 min.
Mohammed Alnahdi
Apologise for let you wait, the wifi drops
Mohammed Alnahdi
This is ghostbsd
MA1
OpenBSD is amazing and all, but it supports very little stuff
Nah its support may be limited but at least devices just work™
MA1
Yeah, and not supported arabic in fribidi in clang
Arabic support is very limited on pretty much all BSDs

No worries, I'll be afk soon too, have to make dinner and such for family

Enjoy

Wireless chip is intel ac 9260 so that's good. As for intel cpu, maybe powerdxx and powerd are a no go since it could use their custom managing system (I'll share links in a moment, a thinkpad of mine had some issues with that, and it is just a matter of give it the proper config). Another thing I'd recommend is to instal drm-kmod and enabling it. To be sure which dedicated gpu your machine has, check it out running pciconf -lv. You'll have to enable the correct one at config after installing the pkgs
Mohammed Alnahdi
I will apply this again in freebsd
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ

Cool. I leave some links here just in case, maybe others can expand in knowledge too. what I'm sharing is just what I use https://wiki.freebsd.org/TuningPowerConsumption Check Intel Speed Shift settings there, since your cpu seems to have those and powerd/xx may not do anything at all https://codeberg.org/n0mad/freebsd-bspwm-config These are my dot files for thinkpad based pcs. Config files are inside system directory where you can find separated .conf files. Intel gpu optimization settings may help Best place to resolve doubts is still the Handbook and forum entries btw
Mohammed Alnahdi
Because the website banned in my residence country.

Who would ban Codeberg? It's too stupid. I hate censorship in all kinds
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Are you sure codeberg link is correctly?
I just double checked it, and it's correct I'm afraid

Love this channel you all are inspirational! I want a pocket laptop. Is there anything freebsd related that can provide?

Something like https://wiki.freebsd.org/Laptops/GPD_pocket or https://wiki.freebsd.org/Laptops/GPD_MicroPC ?
rails
Is this still being produced? Can a monitor be connected?
You can check if the hdmi connection is available or Display Port but I don't think they would include Display port
rails
You can get yourself a raspberry

Seems like it does https://www.gpd.hk/gpdmicropc

I'd personally go for a rpi or rpi clone instead as @vaifumar says, or for an intel based chromebook with bootloader unlock capabilities
Chad
My dream... Yeah ... Dream a complete daily freebsd laptop. I've tried multiple times.

Thank you for your feedback!

You can build yourself a good desktop for daily utilities like development, web browsing and reading books. It only takes 50$ or more
