I've used freebsd on and off for 20 years. I've not found anything that just works. I would like to be able to use the OS with GUI or not... But I'd like for blue tooth and connections work.
accelerat0r 🇮🇱 🇮🇱 🇮🇱
well linux over 20 years and even 15 years ago was just the same !
rails
Yeah but the nature of Unix is that computers are for intelligent people not for people who is it only for social media or games
rails
Therefore usage of Linux or any Unix derivatives are not changing at all
rails
BSD is the souerce of todays giants and still empowering most of the computers*
accelerat0r 🇮🇱 🇮🇱 🇮🇱
i disagree on that ! there are stupid people doing stupid things in everyproject out there
rails
I agree
rails
Like Linus firing Russian devs
rails
I am still thinking that this will never be the case for BSD
accelerat0r 🇮🇱 🇮🇱 🇮🇱
I dont think if that's actually justified ! what I know for sure is when politics are mixed with software stuff things get really messy
rails
Politics are messy and disgusting
rails
It's the RedHat who did this
rails
To comply with the US sanctions
accelerat0r 🇮🇱 🇮🇱 🇮🇱
maybe you are young but it came to my mind IBM and SUN did the same thing in the 90's
rails
I don't know if I'm young but I am at early twenties :))
rails
maybe you are young but it came to my mind IBM and SUN did the same thing in the 90's
I don't know that but Linus tried to justify the incident by saying that he is Finnish
accelerat0r 🇮🇱 🇮🇱 🇮🇱
he is finnish ... that's a fact
rails
Hehe
rails
Russians are smart people as far as I know and they started to fork the linux kernel
rails
They are now making their own Linux
accelerat0r 🇮🇱 🇮🇱 🇮🇱
that's not new .. ! there are as many linux forks as linux distributions out there
rails
Yeah but I don't know I started to hate Linux nowadays
accelerat0r 🇮🇱 🇮🇱 🇮🇱
I dont hate software ! when some code is able to do work for us there is not point on hating the developer
rails
Sure
rails
But the idea behind all Unix philosophy is that the software should always be to free for all maintain
rails
The things Linus has done are against this philosophy
accelerat0r 🇮🇱 🇮🇱 🇮🇱
not really ! my father was using some unix solutions in the 80's and 90's an all of those were close source .. nothing related to freedom in any case
rails
Hmm I don't know that
harmony5 🇺🇳 ⌤
The things Linus has done are against this philosophy
Linus was just complying with sanctions
harmony5 🇺🇳 ⌤
Although his responses maybe could have been better

My dream... Yeah ... Dream a complete daily freebsd laptop. I've tried multiple times.
it's not impossible i have freebsd as my daily driver and i can do anything on it i need even taxes using proprietary licensed software originally developed for windoes
SludgyWitch
the only thing that i'm not able to work with is bluetooth but i don't miss it that much tbh
polyduekes
doas pkg update && doas pkg upgrade
wait, freebsd ships doas by default?

My dream... Yeah ... Dream a complete daily freebsd laptop. I've tried multiple times.
I've used Lenovo x250 , recently changed batteries and it lives 7-8 hours.
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Sudarshan
It doesn't even do sudo by default
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
oem
wow! Can you share which brand/model? (ot but it is fine) Last oem I used only gave 2~3 hours
🦘
the only thing that i'm not able to work with is bluetooth but i don't miss it that much tbh
What about battery life? From my short tests with freebsd on a laptop, Linux seems to last longer
SludgyWitch
well, my battery is not the newest but based on my test I did, battery lasts about 10-15 mins longer than on linux (and around an hour more than win 11)
🦘
Ah, nice!
🦘
What do you attribute the difference in battery life to? Another desktop environment?
Sudarshan

It's obvious that Linux has better dynamic frequency scaling (DFS framework), better ACPI support. If you go to FreeBSD talks, you'll hear people talking about network performance or storage performance, not battery performance on mobile devices. As the adoption will increase, you'll get all sort of things like that, along with redhatware too
Sudarshan
btw Linux powersaving features are not zero cost
Sudarshan
I've benchmarked FreeBSD, Ubuntu and Alpine on my M3 Pro virtualized in UTM. Rust http app with dynamic HTML render: FreeBSD 800,000 req/s, Ubuntu 600,000 req/s, Alpine 53,000 req/s. Requests driven locally with wrk. I suspect it was down to the memory allocator used. Largely, no. At one point FreeBSD had faster networking but Linux tends to get new hardware enablement code and optimizations sooner. But these differences are marginal
polyduekes
Yeah
freebsd sacrifices security in the name of performance, as has been the case with the openssh bundled with base system and PF and IPFW
polyduekes
i mean i guess it is to be expected as they took their leisure time to get aslr properly working
Sudarshan
strong cheap fast choose only two
polyduekes
performance security convenience choose only two
we aren't talking about some advanced fancy security stuff, it is basic stuff https://web.archive.org/web/20210319191046/https://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-pf/2014-December/007528.html they diverged so much they weren't even able to get multi threading work
polyduekes
https://archive.ph/ogVam even the freebsd's own server admin would rather use openbsd stuff then native freebsd ipfw
polyduekes
I don't understand what are you saying
tldr; freebsd's networking stack is a mess
Sudarshan
Sudarshan
I can give you a long list
Sudarshan
But then I'll be kicked at my butt from Theo himself defending his old freebeer mate
MA1
wait, freebsd ships doas by default?
Nope but OpenBSD does since doas was created by Todd C. Miller (the famous OpenBSD dev also creating sudo) and is still developed by the OpenBSD Project as a whole
polyduekes

yeah..... guess i should explain why i asked in order to avoid anyone else repeating the same thing in future XD so since sudo is much more popular then doas, i found it interesting that nomad suggested to use doas instead of sudo more so given the person asked what is the equivalent of sudo apt instal in freebsd
MA1
*jesus chRUST
doas is written in C. Cope.
Sudarshan
doas is written in C. Cope.
I write in C so the security researchers will always have a job
polyduekes
The reason why nomad suggested you to use doas has two simple reasons: 1. Its a BSD project licensed under ISC license 2. It is much simpler to setup, much smaller and much more maintainable than sudo
honestly, as long as you are not doing any commercial stuff, you shouldn't care about the license as long as the stuff is open source
polyduekes
Tell that to RMS lol
eh, i like gpl because it make sure that if my software is poor the fork of it can't get rich 😁
Sudarshan
Hahaha Imagine a random person bragging about creating legendary malware in languages like Delphi, only to be publicly exposed by the real creator in a live stream
MA1
I write in C so the security researchers will always have a job
Well I certainly dont care so much about licensing but I still prefer BSD licensed software because it better covers the 4 foundational software freedoms as defined by the FSF
polyduekes
i also listen to darknet diaries btw
polyduekes
Heard mobman 2
not that ep
polyduekes
i liked the encrochat one
