🇵🇸🍉
and you said yeah thnks i didn't know
🇵🇸🍉
oh LOL
lol 😂😂
🇵🇸🍉
next time when he know that bsd run another init system he will say bsd doesn't run systemd😉🔥🔥🔥🔥
🇵🇸🍉
i think he use internet explorer btw
🇵🇸🍉
🇵🇸🍉
he may faints
Badugar
lol 😂😂
People get surprised when I tell them "No, FreeBSD is not yet another Linux distribution, it's an independent OS" 🙄😌

do you have more pic of beastie
🇵🇸🍉
any way why beastie looks like looney tunes character
τaπ
Why do you think so? GNU/Linux base is cool imo.
XADE
freebsd is not linux its unix lol
both linux & bsd r unix like -_-
Badugar
both linux & bsd r unix like -_-
Unixoid is the better term
XADE
what if he know that macos based on freebsd
macos is based on BSD not freeBSD
XADE
hence based on
Badugar
Userland is partly from BSD the rest is still its own
Badugar
XNU Kernel, Darwin and so on
Badugar
btw, there's OpenDarwin, an OS made from the free parts of Mac OS X that Apple released
Badugar
Never ran it though.
Badugar
The project is small
Badugar
even smaller than Haiku iirc
Badugar
On some VMs it runs already, but not too stable afaik
Badugar
I wonder how much work it might be to restructure FreeBSDs monolithic kernel into something microkernel-like similar to XNU Probably a lot...
Badugar
same

From my experience, Linux fans tend to be less knowledgeable and more annoying, but that's just my experience with people who use a normie friendly distro

Restructure? You can't reshape a monolithic into a micro kernel, it has to be built from scratch

Is GhostBSD maintainer here? 😲
Not here I guess, but he has his own group at @GhostBSD
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
do you have more pic of beastie
https://www.freebsd.org/art/ maybe here
🇵🇸🍉
i know bsd are unix like
🇵🇸🍉
there are conflicts about bsd if it's unix or unix like
Jaco
try ffplay from ffmpeg
Thanks man😊
トミ
there are conflicts about bsd if it's unix or unix like
akshually Unix is a registered trademark and as FreeBSD is not certified it cannot be called being Unix
Jaco
Today is my first whole month of complete submersion on FreeBSD without giving up or looking for alternatives but rather "fixing" FreeBSD for the tasks i need done. It has been quite the adventure😃
Gleb
Hello, I understand that this is a FreeBSD chat, but is freebsd actually usable as a desktop os ?
Gleb
I expect to have a browser, Emacs , KVM and some command line tools
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
I expect to have a browser, Emacs , KVM and some command line tools
Maybe KVM is Linux specific, in FreeBSD you have bhyve but the rest is completely fine for a FreeBSD desktop
Anonymous

As for KVM FreeBSD has bhyve, but don't expect it to work like Linux KVM
Anonymous
But yeah you should be fine with the rest
Anonymous
Also the only issue with chromium is that you can't install extensions, so use Firefox if you're gonna use extensions

Asking to people who use FreeBSD as their main os: Why do you use it instead of a GNU/Linux distro?
τaπ
use a search engine
I alredy did and many of the reviews of FreeBSD over Linux generally don't mention the desktop side of it, or recommend Linux distros over FreeBSD on desktop due to more wide app support, so <ıI wanted to ask here to pc fbsd users about their views.
XS
Asking to people who use FreeBSD as their main os: Why do you use it instead of a GNU/Linux distro?
there's many reasons you might want to something else than linux, which is complex, large, bloated ect
XS
BSD is totally usable for desktop as long as you know how to use it for this specific task.
τaπ
I currently use Arch. I have tried FreeBSD on vm. I liked it and may consider switching to it on my PC but gotta ask to community more before making this decision.
XS
I for the moment can't use FreeBSD on desktop, but I already did. Main reason is lack of rt audio and performances for audio specific applications for my case.
XS
But if you don't need that, it's perfectly fine. Hope more wayland support tough.
τaπ
Yeah, pkg is cool and well maintained but the amount of available software compared to AUR is a bit disappointing. Wonder if there is an AUR-like repository going on for BSD.
🇵🇸🍉
XS
Yah, I understand. I can't just use macOS for my part. I'm supporting this platform at work for portage and QA stuff, and I know how shitty it is to do what you want on it. I also do many other things on Linux that I could not do on macOS, so I prefer not using it and be able to do the most with a single machine without playing with multiboot and proprietary stuff.
🇵🇸🍉
how many os are there 😂😂😂😂
τaπ
I am currently happy with my Arch installation but also liked how FreeBSD doesn't have bloats like systemd and is more stable.
XS
I even not touched windows for personal use since maybe 10 years or more, and it went very fine. But I can understand it's not easy for everyone x)
τaπ
Problems I experienced are: Limited software support (not considering compiling from source) and huge resource consumption compared to Arch Linux.
XS
huge ressources consumption ? do you use zfs ?
τaπ
ufs vs zfs then?
τaπ
Is ufs good for physical and zfs for virtual?
Jaco
Asking to people who use FreeBSD as their main os: Why do you use it instead of a GNU/Linux distro?
I find the commands and tools easier and more simple to remember and use. The community is always friendly and helpful unlike the toxicity of the linux community. It's stable AF, great documentation and everything doesn't feel "all over the place". Also PKG is a COMPLETE package manager which does everything whete in debian it's DPKG and APT. It's a complete OS and not just cluttered pieces fit together and hope for the best. I am a point-click user most the time and FreeBSD had been the perfect fit to setup everything how i want, complete freedom and ease of use if you follow the Docs

I used to have this issue when running ZFS on my old laptop, i reinstalled with UFS and problem was solved. My laptop is flying
Badugar
i just found out theres is another os called aros wtf is this😂😂😂
http://www.aros.org/ An operating system compatible to Amiga OS
Jaco
@Yutyocraft FreeBSD can probably do everything that Gnu/linux can, it just depends on how well you know the OS
Jaco
Wait, you mean ZFS was using too much resources and slow?
Yes, i have 6GB ram, 1.8ghz quad and 1TB HHD so it was slow with ZFS, UFS is much faster in my case

And Icaros Desktop, a great AmigaOS alternative: https://icarosdesktop.org
