Hello and welcome @vanerka !
🇵🇸🍉
guys what's the worst and best desktop environment experience for you? 1-gnome 2-kde 3-xfce 4-Pantheon 5-deepin 7-UKUI 8-budgie 9-mate 10-cute fish 11-cinnamon
Daniel Sławek
Theo best is in my opinion KDE Plasma
Bedreddin
my favourite desktop environment; xfce and mate
Julia
I am having some bad experiences with cinnamon at the moment 😝
Badugar
And i3 for window managers
Stéphane
For me , dwm
Jackie
Gnome 3 be like: extensions A, B and C crash due to last upgrade 3.x.y. Few days later, extension B, C, D crash due to upgrade 3.y.z. 🤷🏻‍♂️
i686
any case I'd go for cinnamon then gnome... worst? no idea
Jaco
FreeBSD + Testdisk/photorec, thank you! 😌

now ya got over the best desktop questions. how about list your top 5 fave (usually unknown) apps.

Good morning everyone! I have discovered this weird issue with FreeBSD when i power on my laptop. It starts loading the modules and when it starts to load the "amdgpu" module, the laptop restarts and then boots normally into my DE. I tried dmesg but I'm not sure what to look for, i can see that the "amdgpu" module has been loaded. Anyone perhaps had a similar issue? FreeBSD 13
Jaco
Can you send us your dmesg logs?
Thanks😊I see a few things in there but i am really not sure
Erfan
Hi everyone , I'm running Linux for 3 years now and I want to switch from it to FreeBSD but I just play dota 2. Does steam work probably on FreeBSD ?

Steam works perfectly yes, i am not sure about Dota but it should be able to play. I play fairly newer games on FreeBSD with Steam sometimes
Erfan
So that's probably going to work cuz dota runs native
Erfan
Ok thanks 😊
Jaco
Ok thanks 😊
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Steam-FreeBSD-2021 this should get your Steam up and running
Jaco
@scounixware i don't know if this info will make a difference but it didn't reboot while busy starting up when i had a ZFS install running. I did the same config except for UFS which is obviously different file system😊
Jaco
And you're using the same hardware?
Exact same hardware, exact same everything. The only change was UFS filesystem. ZFS was too slow on this AMD A6
Anonymous
Yes😊
Hows the battery life? I'm thinking of buying a laptop with this model of CPU
Jaco

I have had it for about 2 years now and i have no complaints, it has treated me well. Very reliable. I would suggest maybe going for the A10 or something. The A6 is like 1.8GHZ quad and i have about 6GB ram. FREEBSD is flying on it though
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Ask them on their official support better @GhostBSD
Anonymous
Aren't there any risks involved?

Aren't there any risks involved?
Seeing your username makes me curious about the differences between FreeBSD and Unix ware btw
XS
It's an old, defunct commercial unix
K
Yes this I know

-f force ?
Anonymous
you know about man pages ?
Anonymous
man:// in konqueror
Badugar
Upgrading all your installed packages -f → force
Badugar
The OS itself is updated by freebsd-update (on FreeBSD at least)
Anonymous
damn i've been doing it wrong. i do pkg update & pkg upgrade
Badugar
IIRC: freebsd-update fetch install Checks for OS updates, fetches and installs them, telling you which files will change, appear and disappear
Anonymous
and pkg upgrade even checks if your're updated
Anonymous
so ya don't even need to do the update part
🇵🇸🍉
is there away to install gnome 41 in freebsd
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
The owner of the GhostBSD repo already told you that what you are trying to do isn't the way the project works. If you want to use FreeBSD 14, then please install vanilla FreeBSD 14 and we'll be happy to help. GhostBSD questions have to go in their group

Hi everyone! 😊👋 I am trying to convert a movie to a playable format on a DVD player. I understand VLC provided by "pkg" is very barebones, so i uninstalled it. I then proceeded to build VLC with ports but it fails in making qt5-make. Could it be due to the previous install of VLC via pkg or wouldn't it matter? I have already found another solution, I'm just trying to get a better understanding

you made sure to use -stable ports with -stable branch (or the -release with -release), right? also if you were on -current expect that things might break from time to time. there are some caveats with mixing /usr/ports and compiled packages form pkg basically if you use custom options you might run into two installed apps or libs being not comptible because, say you didn't include an option while configuring the port but the standard pkg you downloaded needs it. therefore it is discouraged. a better option would be to set up a seperate area for compilation to keep things congruent, like a jail or chroot . there are also some pkg building toolchains that facilitate this on FreeBSD also how did you solve your issue btw?
Jaco
well, in that case it might be worth to invest some time how to use ffmpeg if the movie was a dvd the dvdbackup is useful to achive silent operation/playback
It was a normal movie but i am not familiar at all with video and audio formats, i have put some time aside tomorrow to thoroughly due some research. I installed ports when i did the installation but i read a more recent article that says i should use Git if i want to mix package with ports, from my understanding i can just rm /usr/ports/ and then reinstall via Git?
Jaco
it doesn't matter if you get your ports tree with git or cvs . unless you mean that you get the upstream vlc repo?
I see, no nothing with upstream. I saved the webpage for offline use, i will share it with you tomorrow if you like? If it doesn't make i difference i will try building VLC again, much more user-friendly converter for noobs like me😜
τaπ
Which desktop environment do you guys use in your FreeBSD?
i686
bspwm

Julia
do you believe it is in any way a freebsd problem if I can't use my camera in zoom rooms other than mine but in mine it works fine? I am using the webclient with firefox
Julia
my problem is it says I should get the permission and refresh the page. but I already have given permission and I can restart, reboot anything I like, it does not help
Julia
Did you try clearing zooms permission, and then retrying?
Yes. Going to try more browsers I guess
Suraj
hello guys, I am having a really hard time, i want to switch my server from debian to freebsd. But But But, in debian I have a running email server. I used Luke Smith's emailwiz script to setup email server
Suraj
https://github.com/LukeSmithxyz/emailwiz in freebsd ..I got no script .. and everytime I try it manually. I get confuse
Suraj
wait a min. Don't tell me.. I can use this script ..with few changes here and there .. on FreeBSD?

That's your mistake, you should forget the script entirely and setup the email server yourself Luke is a Linux guy, he won't ensure that his scripts run on FreeBSD
Suraj
https://www.c0ffee.net/blog/mail-server-guide/ I followed this guy's guide. I got struck with LDAP server part.
Anonymous
just give me One Guide by FreeBSD which show me how and I will do it.
First determine if you're going to use the email software you're going use, is it gonna be sendmail or something else?
