Hi guys. How can i enable the beep sound? I've loaded the speaker module. And the value of "hw.syscons.bell" is 1, And for "kern.vt.enable_bell" is 1. What should i do? @n0madcoder @CarlDCharlie @krond Andrey

Carl
where do you want the beep?? in tcsh??
Anonymous
Even it does not work in bash.
swodig
Such a hassle for a beep
Carl
i think you can set when you want the beep in tcsh ... like no matches ... multiple matches ... etc
Carl
let me see
Anonymous
Even i installed the beep package. And i ran # beep -d /dev/speaker -p 800 5, but it did not work again.
Carl
i do not know then ... i always disable and enable the beep with sysctl
Anonymous
Carl
you have 1 in "hw.syscons.bell" and "kern.vt.enable_bell"

Carl

ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
What is "MB" ?

Maybe there is a BIOS setting, but I'm not sure

I am so surprised that freebsd is pretty much like arch Got no issue
Suraj
and Got my old dwm and everything working pretty fine.
XS
what did you expect ? FreeBSD is far older than Arch and has a nice experience toward stable releases.

I thought its not good for desktop but. it contain everything all packages.

it's meant to be used on desktops. just doesn't support propriority hardware like linux do
Badugar
"not good for desktop" could be said for nearly any Unixoid OS ;)

Its more of a jack of all trades, though its more meant for server use, you can also use it as a desktop

There was nothing in the BIOS about "Beep" sound. @n0madcoder

Have you any idea?
K
Have you any idea?
Do you have the beep hardware actually
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Have you any idea?
FreeBSD 13 comes with beep disabled by default. You have however enabled the sysctl setting manually, so my only guess is that the hardware may not have the beep speaker. Could be?

Yes. It was work when i had Linux.

Which hardware is it? Laptop?

Nope. It's a PC. Which information do you need?

Motherboard?

Motherboard: ASUS P5P4 1TLE

Let me check. But my best guess is to search on sysctl to verify if your setting is actually being read

$ sysctl hw.syscons.bell > hw.syscons.bell: 1 $ sysctl kern.vt.enable_bell > kern.vt.enable_bell: 1

We do not have the pckspkr module in FreeBSD. It's speaker module in FreeBSD.
Anonymous
The pcspkr module is for Gnu/Linux distributions(IIRC).

And i have to say, the spkrtest command does not play melodies.

@Learner_DR did you echoed this after kldload: $ echo "cdefgab" > /dev/speaker
Anonymous
Yes, $ kldload speaker
I have loaded that. in /etc/rc.conf: kld_list="speaker"
Anonymous
@Learner_DR did you echoed this after kldload: $ echo "cdefgab" > /dev/speaker
I ran: # printf "cdefgab" > /dev/speaker But it does not work.
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Hmm. Not sure about printf. It should play a sound apparently
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Let me check on mine. Although it's a laptop one
Anonymous
Let me check on mine. Although it's a laptop one
I checked the dmesg and i got: WARNING: Device "spkr" is Giant locked and may be deleted before FreeBSD 14.0.
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
I ran: # printf "cdefgab" > /dev/speaker But it does not work.
I can't create /dev/speaker even if it's being recognized and I use either doas or su
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
The reason is this?
It's weird. I enabled both kern.vt.enable_bell and hw.syscons.bell and still not getting any beep on my Thinkpad
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
kldstat reports speaker.ko loaded
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Hmm, maybe it's about time to search over bugzilla or mail lists in order to get an answer

I'm using twm on freebsd, and whenever it gets started in my .xinitrc, it prints errors like "warning: font for charset X is missing" While these errors don't impede me in anyway, its still annoying to see tens of them appearing in my tty after exiting Xorg Is there anyway to suppress these warnings from twm?
Manuel Sotomonte
Did you make some search in bing/google/duckduck/etc?

Thank you, exporting LC_ALL before twm fixed the warning, I think I should set my locales system-wide
