the above is the precise situation
Anonymous
i915kms.ko
Anonymous
needed to reboot again, because baloo_file_extractor reached approx. 10GB(!) of RAM usage after approx. 4h of uptime
Anonymous
before reboot, I noticed the 'responsiveness' of the system was going steadily down, even while typing in other TG-channels
Anonymous
what I have also not mentioned before: I am a big fan of 'stock settings' - I just use the packages in exactly that configuration which they were meant to be. I think it is important to understand the design philosophie of a product / module first, before to mess around with it. And then, I guess, I were too lazy for doing so.

during installation I found: https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/how-to-use-the-old-or-the-new-i915kms-driver-for-intel-integrated-graphics-with-xorg.66732/
Anonymous
from there, I extracted the following concise information:
Anonymous
The numbering in the table below shows the Intel Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 family of processors,
including it's mobile and desktop parts:
2xxx Sandy Bridge (i915kms.ko in base)
3xxx Ivy Bridge (i915kms.ko in base)
4xxx Haswell (i915kms.ko in base)
5xxx Broadwell (i915kms.ko from ports graphics/drm-next-kmod)
6xxx Skylake (i915kms.ko from ports graphics/drm-next-kmod)
7xxx Kaby Lake (i915kms.ko from ports graphics/drm-next-kmod)

This looked pretty straight forward to me
Anonymous
As I pointed in my postings today - meanwhile, I suspect baloo_file_extractor to create the problem
Anonymous
sometimes, it seems to fail
Anonymous
since reactivation, I had to restart my workstation twice today - baloo_file_extractor consuming 10GB(!) of RAM on a 3TB zfs-mirror with approx. 0,5 Mio. files
Anonymous
It seems, baloo_file_extractor has no sound default settings, or got distracted/misconfigured due to user-ignorance (while I have to state again not even having tried to tweak its basic functionality)
Anonymous
currently, there are only 5 programs running: system monitor, dolphin, kate, telegram and spectacle - consuming 30,2 of 31,9GiB of system RAM. I think this is out of sync and causes the troubles with darkening windows and disappearing menues.

I'm going to have Thinkpad x270
Geld [0/4💉] 🇵🇸 تحيا فلسطين
I am thinking about FreeBSD, but.... I'm afraid of the differences in repository compared to Linux.
Geld [0/4💉] 🇵🇸 تحيا فلسطين
Like...right now I just pacman most of the things.
Geld [0/4💉] 🇵🇸 تحيا فلسطين
But I have heard that FreeBSD runs great on ThinkPads so I would like to test it.
kub-kun
kub-kun
it has many packages
kub-kun
you just type in pkg install <package name>

Ok.

swap is working. Since installation I've been noticing its automatic usage, once you start a program that doesn't seem too big for the OS to fit into available System RAM. I observed this in conjunction with VMs: if one is runnig and grows swap will work flawlessly, if one needed to be started, but would exceed physical RAM the system-startup of that VM slows down and finally come to a halt with error message. I do not have configured any zfs-tweaks in loader.conf

That means the fee PayPal takes is equal to 2.2% + $0.30 per transaction?

Hi, anyone use wireguard?

But not wireguard

Anyone up ?

What's the matter?

Alsactl no sound cards found
Anonymous
I have tried loading snd_hda / snd_driver
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
If you've checked your card is an intel one then look for pulseaudio installed on the system. That is usually a pain
Anonymous
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Also, take a look at the doc pages from FBSD https://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/sound-setup.html
Anonymous
Actually i also have sound working
Anonymous
But alsactl store says, no soundcard found
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
I'd remove pulseaudio if it's not mandatory for your purposes
Anonymous
Anonymous
And i am new to bsd
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Mmm I have no experience with gnome whatsoever
./pascal.sh
./pascal.sh
Arminio
Arminio
And that being said, pulseaudio has had a lot of weird behaviour in the past, but it's really gotten way better...
./pascal.sh
Arminio
./pascal.sh
Arminio
But is it, really?
./pascal.sh
Of course
./pascal.sh
The unix philosophy is
'Do one thing and do it right'
Arminio
Well seriously, pulseaudio is a life-saver these days
./pascal.sh
Arminio
I used to hate it with a passion when it came along, too
Arminio
Yeah systemd is a bit crazy, but also, I currently run a computer with systemd and it really works flawlessly
./pascal.sh
What about OSS / sndio
Arminio
Nothing wrong with that
./pascal.sh
Arminio
Yeah I recently became a fan of NixOS
./pascal.sh
I don't like nixos because it abandoned the FSH Standard
Arminio
Yup it did, in a brutal way. And believe me NixOS works ultra painlessly on my workstation.
./pascal.sh
Mhhh OK
But I just can't imagine using a *nix system without FSH
I just really like that you separate everything after its file type/use case
I really hate the principle of putting a whole program in a single directory
That reminds me of windows
./pascal.sh
./pascal.sh
just check if the package
pulseaudio
Is installed
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
The guy asking for sound support earlier this afternoon was using gnome yes
Anonymous
Gnome depends on pulseaudio 😂😂
Krond
I guess it can be disabled or patched out.
