where is the best place to permanently mount the 4tb hdd in the filesystem?
Wherever you want. Look for zfs set mountpoint https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19253-01/819-5461/gaztn/index.html
./pascal.sh
I'm still having problems accessing my nfs server I now get this error: mount.nfs: timeout set for Sun Jun 28 13:48:33 2020 mount.nfs: trying text-based options 'vers=4.2,addr=192.168.2.252,clientaddr=192.168.2.41' mount.nfs: mount(2): Protocol not supported mount.nfs: trying text-based options 'vers=4,minorversion=1,addr=192.168.2.252,clientaddr=192.168.2.41' mount.nfs: mount(2): No such file or directory mount.nfs: trying text-based options 'addr=192.168.2.252' mount.nfs: prog 100003, trying vers=3, prot=6 mount.nfs: trying 192.168.2.252 prog 100003 vers 3 prot TCP port 2049 mount.nfs: prog 100005, trying vers=3, prot=17 mount.nfs: trying 192.168.2.252 prog 100005 vers 3 prot UDP port 723 mount.nfs: mount(2): Permission denied mount.nfs: mounting 192.168.2.252:/nas/Media failed, reason given by server: No such file or directory What am I missing?

./pascal.sh
oh i figured it out
./pascal.sh
i now have this in my /etc/exports and it works V4: /nas /nas/Media -alldirs -maproot=root -network=192.168.2.0/24

there is the iwm driver for supported Intel 802.11ac wifi cards
Eliab/Andi
Is HDMI for external monitors on FreeBSD supported?
Arminio
yes
Eliab/Andi
yes
hmm I have troubles to detect my external monitor on Xfce4
Eliab/Andi
Does xrandr show it as connected?
output: Can't open display
Eliab/Andi
Arminio
You should be able to list the connected monitors from it
Eliab/Andi
You should be able to list the connected monitors from it
actually yes; it's weird bc I've read on the handbook or FreeBSD Forum :/
Eliab/Andi
/boot/loader.conf hw.syscons.disable=1 kern.vty=vt
Eliab/Andi
is it recommended to set this up?
Eliab/Andi
You should be able to list the connected monitors from it

the norm in bsd....xorg.conf is in /usr/local/etc.... it's not in /etc.... that's linux

All good. Only 2 additional thoughts you may consider:
Anonymous
1. My swap partitions are always p3-partitions
Anonymous
2. The Boot-partition on the SSD is safe for BSD. If you reconsider to install/use Linux in the future, a 512MB (not kB) Boot-partition would be an improvement. But that's only important for distro-hoppers ... 😉
dapit
I thought the "inner" side of the disk would be better for swap?
Anonymous
If I remember correctly the physical speeds on a turning disk is higher at the outer perimeter. I do not have a good measure for the ratio between shorter head movements closer to the disk axis vs. higher read/write performance on the outside sectors. Never saw a review / benchmark / article comparing these 2 limiting factors.
dapit
This is the first time I'll try to use the GPT and zfs. Used to be MBR.
Anonymous
Doesn't matter. Debian based distros need at least 512MB boot partitions, if you do not want to be constantly annoyed by full partitions while keeping 2+ kernels
dapit
Sorry not /boot I mean the boot partition
Anonymous
Maybe it is even fastest by putting it into the middle. That is expert know-how ... I guess...
Anonymous
yes
Anonymous
with that size of SSD and its speed advantage over his 300GB HDD it should be ok
dapit
Not Bad but that small root can get tough
I rarely use more than 7gb, with full blown KDE, Libre office, gimp and whatnot. That's why I put /var on the other disk.
dapit
/var/lib and /var/log can go nuts
dapit
I'll report the result tomorrow. It's past midnight here

10-12GB for some more apps on KDE should do. Currently I hold 15GB on my GhostBSD-workstation with several browers, CAD, Marble, office and multimedia apps
dapit
Thank you guys

I see nothing wrong with symlinking that to /etc though
yes ... that"s what the others are doing too ... those who...up to your preference
