Of course, I tested Arch on CLI, also

and Suse Tumbleweed

Yes in the BSD world there is no change in how stuff works If you learned something 10 years ago it can still be done today using that way
Anonymous
All crap in direct comparison to the BSDs
./pascal.sh
I need systems which grow as long I keep them
That's why I chose freebsd over linux for my homeserver

Go and google "Daniel Seuffert klärt auf" together with "FreeBSD" or "OpenBSD" as a YT-video
Anonymous
He has some strange humor, but what he was saying then also convinced me that there isn't anything better than the BSDs
Eliab/Andi

yep, in such times of globalization and a lot of changes; rush of times; BSD is setting up a clear message: stability, and no playground for big changes like Linux
Anonymous
I think thats it
Anonymous
direct comparisons what makes the BSDs great
Anonymous
this video was an absolute eye opener for me
dapit
Search Robonuggie and iBSD on youtube for BSD source videos
Eliab/Andi
I think thats it
It's from Daniel Seuffert, isn't it? I found it on Yotube

Yes. Daniel Seuffert. I also watched many Robonuggie-Videos. Also good, as you said.
./pascal.sh
Do i need swap if i have 32GB of ram ? xD
dapit
If you use laptops then yes you need it. Use swapfile.
./pascal.sh
Uhm i just hit the start installation and now that happened What is going on there?
./pascal.sh
Wow after a long time its now fetching packages I don't think the installation will work
./pascal.sh
the machine does not find a boot device
./pascal.sh
i will try it again now
./pascal.sh
same error
./pascal.sh
could the sata cable be broken?
./pascal.sh
ok i now changed the sata cable as well as the ssd lets see
kub-kun
ok hope it will work
./pascal.sh
cross fingers
./pascal.sh
xD
kub-kun
Xd
./pascal.sh
Ok its working now :D
./pascal.sh
after changing the ssd and sata cable freebsd bootet and installed without an error
Eliab/Andi
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 cool
./pascal.sh
how should i format my hdd and mount it ?
./pascal.sh
should i create a zpool for it?
Eliab/Andi
should i create a zpool for it?
I would go with Auto ZFS
./pascal.sh
I would go with Auto ZFS
ok how can i do that?
Eliab/Andi
ok how can i do that?
Normally, after starting the iso , directly during the installation process; otherwise I guess via terminal later on. But I'm not sure, how and if it's right :/
./pascal.sh
ok so i just created a zpool
./pascal.sh
i now have 2 zpools one zroot with my ssd and one called 'nas' with my 4tb iron wolf pro
./pascal.sh
where is the best place to permanently mount the 4tb hdd in the filesystem?
./pascal.sh
i guess bsd has an /etc/fstab like linux has
./pascal.sh
OK i did it
./pascal.sh
I have now mounted it to /nas I'm not sure if it is a good idea to directly mount the nas drive to the root filesystem But I guess its OK
./pascal.sh
I just saw that no mountpoint except the swap partition is listed in /etc/fstab Is that normal under BSD?
Arminio
I have now mounted it to /nas I'm not sure if it is a good idea to directly mount the nas drive to the root filesystem But I guess its OK
There's no reason to question doing that. If it feels good for you, put in / whatever you want.
Arminio
It's your computer and it's your / so feel free.
./pascal.sh
OK :)
Arminio
I'd recommend not doing that at work though, people will love to find things where they expect them to be. But for your own use, why not.
./pascal.sh
A thing which I dont like is that pkg pulls a lot of X dependencies for vim I just installed it through ports now and disabled all X related stuff Problem is that I have to rebuild that stuff for vim updates
Arminio
There's a package called "vim-console"
Arminio
vim-console-8.2.0491_1 Improved version of the vi editor (console only)
./pascal.sh
6 MiB No deps Perfect thx
./pascal.sh
Should I create another user for ssh and disable root login?
Arminio
Should I create another user for ssh and disable root login?
I personally don't see much of a reason to disable root ssh logins, but I would disable password logins and use public key authentication exclusively.
Arminio
You should create a normal user account to work with on your machine anyways, but that isn't really related to SSH.
./pascal.sh
ok
./pascal.sh
can someone tell me what the best way is to setup plex media server? It is recommended to set it up in a jail but how can i do that?

jails are all about a concept: copy deps at the root folder and try to resolve every problem. I recommend ldd, tracing software and some googling about errors plus jailing keywords. I don't know if for BSD also, but for other OSs there're programs doing ti automagically.
./pascal.sh
Ok
Anonymous
just a joke: if in doubt, copy the whole system hahaha
./pascal.sh
Lol
Anonymous
hahaha
./pascal.sh
Just rebootet after trying to optimize network speed using the calomel guide This bootup really takes time I have to disable the btx timeout 😂

do it always safely: step by step and trying, if you commit a mistake and you don't check it then you lose time and probably get frustrated.
./pascal.sh
i get about 200mbit over wifi now to the server better than before but still bad
./pascal.sh
i should get about 400

wireless is about lot of thingies
