I suppose that https://dmesgd.nycbug.org/index.cgi is "master" for supported/unsupported HW.

I do.
Jay
It helps for people looking for supported hardware. Dont be a dick, upload your dmesg output.

Hey guys
Eliab/Andi
Would u recommend using FreeBSD 12.1 or 13?
Джюс
I had some troubles with freebsd-current, so 12.1
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
12.1 unless your hardware requires anything in the edge like newer drm-kmod

ok thx 😊 Well, actually not. My Dell lap is from 2010 ; my HP14 actually may be more interesting. AMD Ryzen 5 3500U

You're welcome (: The HP one is an APU (AMD Ryzen + Radeon graphics)? If so, you'll probably need drm-current-kmod to use the full power of the gpu

😊 yeah it is AMD Ryzen + Radeon graphics. So in this case FreeBSD 13 would be suitable, wouldn't it?

I had to switch to FreeBSD 13 in a Ryzen 7 3700 to make it work properly. Maybe someone has a better solution here. FreeBSD 13 or CURRENT is the head branch so sometimes things break or stop working and you need to patch them or wait for the solution merge

Alvaro
hi
Alvaro
how can i install anything on freebsd 8.4 without pkg ?
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
@Or4vl4 using ports
Alvaro
ok so... I investigated but I couldn't find the /usr/ports on the machine
Alvaro
how can I do it ?
Alvaro
"Older releases are not supported"
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
"Older releases are not supported"
Didn't notice that, sry
Alvaro
first of all I'm going to install the Ports Collection and then I think that will can install the ports and compile
Alvaro
I can install ports collection with portsnap command or svn
Alvaro
i can't*
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
Just curious, may I ask what's the reason to not upgrade the system?
Alvaro
actually I'm not authorized
Alvaro
but in 8.4 there is not portsnap... so i can't install de collection ports
Alvaro
and not found anything to install (not make, no portsnap, no svn...)
ɴꙩᴍᴀᴅ
@Or4vl4 Here's something: pkg0.nyi.freebsd.org/FreeBSD:8:amd64/latest/All Has an index of pkgs. I'm not in front of a computer now but maybe you can try to download the program needed and install it. I don't guarantee anything since I didn't face a similar situation before

Hey! I read, that ixsystems wants to port their solutions to Debian. Do you think they wants to move away from FreeBSD ?
Arminio
Pretty unlikely

We're specifically making all the portable bits (middleware and UI) able to run on other OS's for future product(s). Right now we're working to port it to Debian 11 (Bullseye) We're working on our next additions to the FreeNAS/TrueNAS family of storage software and will be using the same middleware and UI for much of it. More details in the coming months as we get things into shape in the R&D lab, but we're very excited for what's coming! Stay tuned!

Some people are thinking, that they will move away, like trident did ...
Anonymous
I found something : “Just to clarify, FreeNAS as it exists will continue on FreeBSD for 12.0 and beyond. This will be bringing some of the same software-base to Linux to unveil some new products that are Linux-based in the coming months. If you currently are happy with FreeNAS as it sits today, you can expect to keep updating it on BSD going forward.”

I’m ok with that

Has anyone ever configured an rsyslog (client) to send logs to a remote syslog server (which is on windows)?
Alvaro
hi everyone, how can I restart syslog in Freebsd 8.4 ?
cp
you mean syslogd ?
Alvaro
yes
cp
8.4
cp
that is old
Alvaro
yes..
Alvaro
I know it
cp
/etc/rc.d/ <—-
cp
I do not remember if there was a service command back then
Alvaro
there isn't /etc/rc.d/syslog and not a service or systemctl command
cp
https://docs.freebsd.org/doc/8.4-RELEASE/usr/share/doc/freebsd/handbook/configtuning-syslog.html
cp
service syslogd start
cp
if the /etc/rc.conf contains the proper infos
cp
if not service syslogd onestart
cp
but that will start it only one time
cp
if the rc.conf does not contain any proper variables for it to start automatically at boot
cp
https://docs.freebsd.org/doc/8.4-RELEASE/usr/share/doc/freebsd/handbook/configtuning-rcd.html
cp
ls /etc/rc.d/
