now, it does resemble one system of the past rather heavily, Windows 2000, granted Windows didn't have a stage-1 GUI installer until Vista, but the wizard dialog is rooted in the Win2k HIG

I preferred 98se. I used it till 2006, then switched to Xp. By that time Xp had become a good os (first version in 2001 was not that good) and hardware had become better, so the transition was flawless

Also, everything at the right place and possibility for customization. I know it's absurd, but I switched from 10 to 11 just bcs, since I am dyslexic, the default windows 10 font really annoyed me and I couldn't change it

Maybe the writer was meaning Windows 95 apps setup wizards.

well I just booted an XP VM and it reverted to 16 color mode for some reason. I figured I might as well use the opportunity here. :P

XP really assumed basically everyone would be in 16-bit color or better all the time. The Luna theme doesn't work in less than that. Almost no icons were updated for 16/256 color modes in the XP style, they just stay the same as the Win2k versions
