WSL2 might be more "boring" being Hyper-V running Linux, but it runs the real Linux kernel with a hard disk file. It lets applications have native Linux performance.

Windows and Linux have very different low-level semantics. Having to emulate some Linux features on NT directly meant quite a lot of things that are super-fast on Linux end up slow on WSL1. Even things like "npm install"; creating thousands of files in under a second is easy for Linux, hard for Windows.

by the way, I heard that the Windows kernel is much slower than the Linux kernel (system calls)

If you think MIcrosoft is wrong, write your own subsystem. You can even target Windows 11 if you want to compete with WSL. Make it so file access and IPC are Linux native fast.

Windows 2000 and XP demonstrated something went very, very wrong between the two releases. Win2000 was snappy, everything opened fast like in that video. Even on machines that were below MS's recommended specs. Windows XP is a slog. Even on machines many times better than the recommended specs. Nothing opens instant.
