This theme feature existed since Windows 95, if I'm not mistaken.

Strangely, I remember that first time theming has been introduced only in Windows XP in 2001. 🤔

Ah, so here's the thing! 😃 It's like KernelEx, but for themes.
Chungy
indeed. that system also has KernelEx installed. It was necessary to run the GOG installer for Serious Sam (which is made to run on XP+ only)
Chungy
Serious Sam itself doesn't need help to run on WinMe, but it was more convenient than getting my CD out
Chungy
(well, plus the CD drive being ~24 years old, it's very slow and noisy ejecting/closing the tray. I made a CD-R copy of Windows Me. If the drive was going to eat a disc, I'll let it be a throwaway.)
Chungy
Win2000 was going to be my backup if Me didn't work, but it did work after a short time finding the graphcis and audio drivers online.

time to give reactos a windows 10 skin

isn't that what the "Modern" theme is?

ufffff, no thanks, horrible

you can let it exist and not use it :p
Chungy
I'll only ever use the Win2k theme on ReactOS. Doesn't bother me other options are available.

I was born around Windows 3.11, I used Wiwndows 98 and I prefer the look of Windows Vista and Windows 10. I think people who are in awe of Windows XP and other old systems are in awe of nostalgia.

Impossible Challenge: Install Windows XP Kernel on Windows Millenium Edition.
Camarada Gato
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think a per-file permissions and user control system is almost useless in terms of security.
Camarada Gato
Well, maybe it works while the operating system is on and while media unmounting is blocked. But once you have physical access to the block device, all of that becomes useless.
GALLY
Then it is useful when you do not have physical access to the device :)

I was born around Windows 2.1x & Windows 3.00. But my first experience ever with a personal computer was on XP around 2006-7 (used as a home computer).

Me too, and xp didn't get as boring as 7's look. And 7 hurt my eyes at night

What if ReactOS had something like WSL?
Matrix Telegram Bridge
duc: Reactos will unlikely have hyperv any time soon; WSL is literally just a lightweight VM with some integrations, can be made with CMD, ssh client and vbox or qemu or whatever.
MethanoVicky
but since we have ntvdm...
Chungy
What if ReactOS had something like WSL?
What if ReactOS had something like Node.js?
Chungy
more fundamentally, it is a NT subsystem implementing an ELF loader and the Linux ABI.
Chungy
Hypothetically, it could exist for ReactOS. It takes one person to write that support.
Matrix Telegram Bridge
hbelusca Z[J]=∫𝒟𝜑 exp(ⅈS[𝜑,J]/ℏ): except that the real wsl1 on Windows had to use so-called pico-processes (i.e. extra support from the kernel) etc.
Timofej
It's WSL2. First wsl was a very cool, it was modification kernel
but stupid Indians ruined everything. they couldn't finish this cool idea properly, abandoned it, and made a stupid boring virtual machine

If whomever wants to write a Linux subsystem for ReactOS wants to copy Microsoft's implementation path, then sure, it could be done. Until someone is interested enough to develop it, it doesn't exist.
Chungy
At least there's btrfs on ReactOS already and Linux file ownership and modes shouldn't be an issue. They had to change major things in NTFS to support Linux trees.
Chungy

I don't think we should get racist in this channel (and what does that have to do with WSL anyway?)
MethanoVicky

Well, why did they start using a virtual machine and did not develop the idea of running Linux programs in the kernel? Obviously the latter should be faster
Chungy
Microsoft hit some severe limitations in the way WSL1 is architected, especially related to IPC and file access. They got a little tired of "Why is it so slow compared to native Linux on same hardware?" and did Hyper-V instead for WSL2.
MethanoVicky
but wsl1 had a low compatibility right?
MethanoVicky
tbh i switched to win11 dev just for wsl2
Chungy
Windows and Linux have very different low-level semantics. Having to emulate some Linux features on NT directly meant quite a lot of things that are super-fast on Linux end up slow on WSL1. Even things like "npm install"; creating thousands of files in under a second is easy for Linux, hard for Windows.
