64 bit is the limitations of 32 bit squared
Mike
64 bits is 64 bits. tbh, most 64 bits systems just use ram and cpu access, and cpu instructions 64 bit long. ram addressing is 48 bits, iirc
Mike
and btw, even with 32 bit (and even with 16 bits!): fpu was 80 bit
Mike
48 bit is more than enough too
*for now, for the common user

the official modern windows filesystem is 48 bit. although i will say were getting close to the 256TB limit.
Mike
going to bring my dog home after a few days out, see you later
Chungy
RISC-V has a 128-bit ISA specced out for future proofing. Probably even practical today for certain workloads
Chungy
@bpwel you verge on trolling, but it's much more likely you're a minor born into the 64-bit CPU world. Computer technology and requirements expand all the time. What was acceptable in 1996 is no longer in 2022. It doesn't mean anything was based around "greed" (not sure what you think that word means). In 2040 you may as well be scoffing OSes from the 2020s for "being too greedy to allow files bigger than 16EB"
Chungy
Yeah that explains a lot.

and yes im a bit of a troll. i like pissing off apple haters who i think unfairly give apple hate for things companies like samsung, google, microsoft also do.

i was born in 2003. the same year 64 bit hit the market. but i remember using windows 32 bit xp, vista, 7 as a kid.
recently i bought a 13 inch mid 2007 white macbook and have been trying older macos and windows on it. ive been using operating systems like windows 2000, xp 32 bit, macos tiger (2005), macos leopard (2007) which are 32 bit based. the computer has a 64 bit cpu but a 32 bit efi which means it can boot 32 and 64 bit legacy and 32 bit uefi and with some modifications 64 bit uefi operating systems.
Anonymous
this explains everything
to be fair 64 bit windows wasnt released until 2005 and 64 bit macos wasnt released until 2009
Mike
to be fair 64 bit windows wasnt released until 2005 and 64 bit macos wasnt released until 2009
and still in most production plants expensive instruments and machinery is often managed by an old pentium class pc with windows 95 or even dos 6.22

i also lived in a time when the original volkswagen beetle was still being made
Mike
like the fiat uno/mille
Anonymous
wtf, it has been produced till the 2000s
original volkswagen beetle was made from 1938-2003, new beetle 1997-2011, last beetle 2011-2018
Mike
even me 262 was produced again in usa in the 2000s, but this doesn't mean i live in the me 262 service times
Mike
also, i was a kid during fiat uno and r5 (in europe) golden times. you can still find quite a few of those cars, and tbh my car is one of those, but this doesn't mean it's a recent car

i get the feeling this person tries to sound smart by using big words, yet fails to fool anyone since almost everyone in there knows a thing or two more about computers

im smarter than microsoft which was founded by former worlds richest person bill gates. microsoft says february 29 1900 is real. i guess you could say im smarter than who was once the richest person in the world.

they doubled down on their wrongness and gave the compatibility excuse. if they care so much about compatibility explain why xp 32 bit drivers dont work on xp 64 bit.

also why isnt xp, vista 32 bit, 7 32 bit compatible with gpt? macos got gpt support in 2005 when xp was the latest.

You just can't boot from it. they're perfectly compatible with gpt for non-boot disks. You really need to get your facts straight.

macos got gpt bootability in 2005. yet apple haters shamed iphones for getting 120 hertz displays 1 year after samsung.
Chungy
No one really cares.
Chungy
Windows doesn't support booting from GPT on BIOS, because they never wrote boot loader support for it
Chungy
Go use Linux if you want to boot from BIOS and GPT

windows 64 bit got it in 2008 and windows 32 bit got it in 2012. macos got gpt when only their desktop towers had 64 bit cpus.

i like its macos design

wipes the whole hard drive. still has startup disk in settings anyway. thats how much it copied macos. it has things that dont even work properly.

Windows got it in 2005. XP64 and 2003 both support UEFI
so i can boot and install them in uefi mode?
Chungy
Yes
Anonymous
last time i tried i only saw legacy. even on my computers with a 64 bit efi.
Chungy
For practical purposes you might push the date to 2006 for Vista, first common release with it.
Anonymous
Chungy
i thought vista got it in 2008 and 8 was the first for 32 bit
Vista was released in 2006. 32-bit Windows has always been BIOS-only. 64-bit supports BIOS and UEFI.
Chungy
That's nice. So does Vista.
Anonymous
8 and 10 have an efi folder with bootia32.efi
efi boot shows up on my 32 bit efi mac for 10 32 bit but when i try efi boot it just freezes on the mac boot picker screen. legacy mode boots fine though.

guess who made the first 64 bit smartphone. apple.
guess who sold their users to prisms just after apple, yahoo and ms: apple

i didnt live in the old age of computers but i dont pretend that i do and pull nonsense out of my ass, i'm willing to learn how things were and gain an understanding of it

everyone was saying all computers were gonna crash at the beginning of the new millenium. except 2001 was the actual beginning of the new millenium, century, and decade
