I know cases of instruments' software which need specifically XP to be run

It's what that patch does get

Also, it ends in 2023, not 2021

One of my friends is still using Windows XP on notebook, and that won't change 😏
Stas'M
same as I'm using Windows 7 here
Petrus
I'm interested in ReactOS to be stable, to fix those scenarios

<Cernodile> XP is only dangerous if you don't know what you're doing
rosbridge
<Cernodile> Common sense applies to everything

<Cernodile> XP is only dangerous if you don't know what you're doing
Well, on the internet, it's getting quite dangerous
Trust me, I've used XP with the POSReady patch until end of support on an old laptop
And even when doing basic YouTube stuff, and email writing, I got a lot of cleaning to do (Malwarebytes, Avast, and all that stuff were always complaining when I installed them for a day, just to clean everything)

Common sense isn't a universal thing sadly
It’s dangerous even with common sense. One xss-injection, malicious prefect or even image in some cases. That’s not entirely XPs fault (even though it’s missing a lot of security features) but rather a result of the end of support
Mike
i still use a couple of windows xp pcs. i don't feel so unsafe, if you just visit reliable sites and keep common sense and a good antivirus and firewall on, it's safe

btw, in a university lab where my brother works, they still use older windows versions, and even dos (if you have a 100k euros spectrofotometer, perfectly set up but with drivers only for windows 3.1 and a 5 euros 486 pc, if you burn the pc you don't change the spectrofotometer...)

<hbelusca> +1

hacker12455
most likely it uses proprietary drivers or software
hacker12455
and it most likely won't work on newer hardware
hacker12455
still the drivers might be locked to older OSes
Anonymous
Which may work kind of well

yes... in italy cnr, the national research institute, works in third world conditions. usually scientists are underpaid and, when they discover something, they don't benefit from this. if it's a good thing, politicians and their friends get the merits for this. if it's a bad thing (ie, geologists discovering a fault or a ravine, or biologists discovering pollution) they're ignored and if something goes wrong it's even their fault. in the end, everyone who can goes to another nation (i wish i could)
Mike
(i don't work in cnr, but my brother does. i just got out of university due to some family and personal problems, i was a natural science student, close to my degree. sometimes i go in my brother's lab. sorry for the ot)
Petrus
Don't worry. It's always interesting to know what's happening in research in other countries
Mike
i hope your countries work better than mine. italy has great people destroyed by bad politicians/tycoons/vips.
Petrus
Mine is similar to Italy, I fear 😥

<hbelusca> Sounds like France too.
Jose
In Spain there are s lot of people in the TIC area but also a lot of precariousness.
Jose
Free/OpenSource is a great thing but if people do not have enough income then can not spend personal time in free projects.
Petrus
I'm from Spain, too
Jose
Region?
Petrus
Aragón

Jose
Me, Madrid
Petrus
yeah 🤟🏻
Petrus
Nice to meet you
Jose
It's a small world! Aragón also exist! 😉
Jose
There are opensource events in Aragón where to present ReactOS?
Petrus
I don't think so 😕
Petrus
Most IT events are about webapps development and so on
Petrus
No one cares about operating systems. People assume they grow in trees
Jose
Commercial products. In Madrid in the computer technician association i was talking with some people and some times one of them give a meeting to explain ReactOS. But is far from where i live.
Petrus
That would be a starting point
Jose
Some times they organize events and if someone have knowlegge about a theme they let a room for the event freely.
Petrus
I know 🤷🏻♂️
Eris
webapps are a pretty shitty thing since devs now opt to choose electron instead of writing native stuff, i think the amount of people that wanna develop natively is decreasing rapidly
Petrus
The all-mighty-SaaS-perspective is ruining IT
Eris
the whole idea of electron being cross-platform is good, but doesnt do jackshit when those same webapp devs cant port their stuff to different OSes, therefore defeating the whole concept of cross-platforming
fuck me man, even java does it better and its terrible (in terms of performance)
Petrus
Even Go does cross-compilation better
Eris
i can semi excuse electron apps if the vendor has a web version of the same program, but when i look at my RAM usage...
