Hence why many people are thinking ReactOS is a glorified Wine
In its conception it isn't, fortunately
But something is shared with Wine : you have to add a lot of non free stuff
Anonymous
I mean, it's mostly a non issue, but seeing an open source project which needs closed source stuff to work is...
Well... Weird, I think
rosbridge
<Cernodile> That isn't the point of video at all.
rosbridge
<Cernodile> I'd twist it around that it's impressive it can even use those files.

Hell it's impressive that everything else is stable

Hell it's impressive that everything else is stable
That's impressive as well for sure
But, remember that you're adding rock solid components to a small file base (ROS isn't that feature packed when it comes to NT 5.x support, some stuff do not work for now)
rosbridge
<Cernodile> Not really a fair comparison - ReactOS targets win2k3sp2, therefore it should be able to run any of the files interchangeably.
rosbridge
<Cernodile> Yes, it is a hack, but it also shows how mature ReactOS is on the kernel side
rosbridge
<Cernodile> It's a intended "hack", you need to be able to change it if you choose so

rosbridge
<Cernodile> as for the "But something is shared with Wine : you have to add a lot of non free stuff" - No, that isn't the goal of this "hack", it's a side-effect of being actually NT compatible that you're able to use an already fully developed subsystem as drop-in replacement.
rosbridge
<Cernodile> Of course this will get attention from people that are enthusiastic about the project and will share success stories of how stable ReactOS is
rosbridge
<Cernodile> This is all good, it still proves a good point
rosbridge
<Cernodile> Specifically on this video, it points out that if you replace certain user land drivers with proper NT ones, this is what project is able to achieve - it proves the system itself is mature enough to support such functionality from its core.
rosbridge
<Cernodile> Remember, the kernel used in those videos is still FOSS
Chungy
@LothaireLaBrebis how many years has it been since you ran wine? If you think you need to load literal Windows components to make it work... hasn't been true for a very long time :P
rosbridge
<Cernodile> I don't even need actual DirectX redistributables on wine, just use dxvk lol

<Cernodile> That's Oleg Dubinskiy's channel

🙄
Well I wasn't sure about it sooooo ^^
rosbridge
<Cernodile> Many versions of Office work fine in ReactOS, there's ton of CAD software that works too, Modern games don't work on XP anyways anymore.
rosbridge
<Cernodile> You need better examples than that.
rosbridge
<Cernodile> I have to agree with @the1freeman here.

rosbridge
<Cernodile> Maybe he didn't need "many stuff" to get it working, maybe 1 file for sound, then install DirectX? Has that crossed your mind.

rosbridge
<Illen> iirc I did not replace anything, just usual redistributables installation, VBox OGL renderer, and it worked. That's what you would do on Windows too

Can someone make an ROS icon stickers, like how there's windows vista and Windows 2000 icon stickers?

And you mostly need some proprietary stuff
Anonymous
Such as the nVidia driver, the VAAPI for Intel (mostly free though, only QSV is proprietary)
Anonymous
And maybe broadcom/Atheros/Intel drivers
realAceHW
random wireless and wired networking, bluetooth?
Anonymous
Might also want Flash, even though it's dead
Anonymous
It's eos is in 202x iirc

End of shit

<Cernodile> </joke>
Mark
Now close the joke in python
Anonymous
Well, wasn't I right ?
Anonymous
Everyone in this planet NEEDS at the very least ONE proprietary thingy
Anonymous
And yup, Adobe Flash's end of support is planned
Anonymous
In the end of 2020, I verified
Nor
But will ROS be ready when w7 gets eos-ed Jan 2020? 😊
Also, zfs for ROS (on root) planned?
Chungy
no and no
Nor
Anonymous
Also, in January 2020, it'll be the end of extended support.
There's still emergency support until 2027, that's paid, as it was with XP
However, as with XP it was easy to get (in the form of the POSReady patch), with Windows 7 that'll be harder to figure out
Nor
Judging by the current state of ROS I wasn't really expecting ROS to be "ready" in 2020... Just a fantasy I had... 😊
Will leave windows for good probably, so POSReady for w7 might not be needed by me... 😊
Thanks for the input!
Re: zfs: I like the boot evironments, especially installing / updating into BEs. Less chance for an update to screw up the system. No more annoying recovery in such an event, just reboot into previous BE, done.

So Windows 7 will get 18 years of continuous support, as XP did
rosbridge
<Cernodile> That "emergency support" won't be free, you'll maybe get 1-2 free years for 7 posready, rest is paid support
Chungy
Chungy
yes ZFS is the best by far in pretty much every environment :)

that's basically the only problem oof
Chungy
it's not even much of a 'problem' unless you have a very old PC :P
Chungy
ZFS was designed to work well on systems with as little as 256MB of RAM
Chungy
I would love if ReactOS had it (there is an experimental Windows port), but it's not likely to happen any time soon :P

I'm not sure if that's the most important feature to get, but yeah, the more we get, the most interesting it'll be
Anonymous
We should get a github bot that forwards PRs here
Or a mattermost bridge so people might talk more as well
