now I'm home I decided to see just how much "not great in Wine" notepad++ is
Chungy
Chungy
oop. works perfectly :B

oop. works perfectly :B
well I didn't try a while back
Anonymous
Wasn't even Wine 4.x Might have been Wine 3.12 or something
Eris
3.12? will guarantee you it'll work just fine
Chungy
probably
Chungy
i've heard of people running notepad++ in wine pretty much since that text editor started
Chungy
it mainly just uses MFC and nothing actually fancy.
Eris
Probably because it's not that great in Wine
sooo, what was that again about Notepad++ not being great in wine?

Sometimes nano sometimes Kate or KWrite🤔

<Cernodile> Wine can handle complex and demanding games and you would dare to make claim that notepad++ doesn't work up to the task?
Chungy
It's not really a matter of how complex a program is perceived to be, but rather Wine's support for whatever ABIs are being used. Notepad++ does not do anything funky. :P
Mark
He always makes up shit

Wine doesn't handle complex and demanding games by itself. It mostly does NT calls. But most of the work is done by stuff like Proton, D3DVK, and non-free addons that we normally add with Winetricks
hacker12455
Proton is based on Wine
Anonymous
Proton is based on Wine
Well, yeah, but they added so much stuff on top of it that it's mostly their work that prevail
hacker12455
And stuff from Proton is being upstreamed to Wine
Anonymous
And stuff from Proton is being upstreamed to Wine
Yup, only in the Staging version for now. btw how can we have such a gap between "stable" and "staging" ?
hacker12455
^
hacker12455
Add DXVK to that list too
Anonymous
what do you mean by that now in terms of version or what?
Yup, Wine Stable is 4.0.1, and Staging is at 4.15
Anonymous
Also when will they start bundling Mono (for ASP .NET stuff) and Gecko (For Web stuff) with the full Wine ? It is a pain especially in ArchLinux, where it says it's not installed, even though it's installed and is in the correct Wine prefix
hacker12455
they probably won't include it to make the package smaller
hacker12455
since not everyone needs it
Anonymous
since not everyone needs it
For people that need it, the bundled helper has to work, but also fair point
Eris
i dont even get your initial point too
Stas'M
i dont even get your initial point too
It was "chatting for the sake of chatting"
Eris
ah, right, should've considered that option too
Eris
it's basically trying to do hot takes when they aren't even close to being hot takes
Eris
When could you trust something he said?
was more of a sarcastic reply than anything serious. ;p
Anonymous

Not doing that, just showing that Wine by itself isn't the reason why gaming on Linux is all that impressive, Proton, DXVK, and non-free stuff are what does the stuff
Anonymous
Also, if you don't like me, just say it, is it hard for you to tell me that I say shit
Anonymous
man, do i even need to point out how wrong you are?
What I said isn't wrong... That's the reality
Eris
Also, if you don't like me, just say it, is it hard for you to tell me that I say shit
i'm pretty sure you're a chill person, but with the amount of bullshit you keep talking about (ha, it's not even hard) and make it up at the same time, i have a slight dislike towards you.
Eris

the reality that you are indeed wrong but you just dont want to admit to it? hm, seems counter productive if you ask me, but then again, i am at work, trying to do a presentation on audio devices but instead of doing that i'm arguing against a wall

I understand that, there's no problem about that, it's all good, however just tell it right up front instead of finding ways to hide it... As a human, I prefer when people actually say what they think of me

Well, good luck for your work... And no, you're not talking to a wall, I just don't understand how Wine is the only reason why everything works... Wine is so underpowered, that there's something called Winetricks and even a "paid Wine with proprietary stuff"
Eris

wine is essentially the foundation of getting windows programs to run, so it's natural that it also tries to get games running, with some imperfections here and there, but it's doing what it can valve chose wine simply because it supports the majority of programs already, they just improve the gaming aspect of wine and contribute back to the wine source code, i honestly dont know why that's hard to understand
Eris

to keep it simple, wine is the only reason everything 'works', through the devs, those that contribute patches, you name it and calling wine underpowered is just awfully wrong. winetricks is there to make things a bit more easier for certain programs, that's really it
Eris
Well, that's exactly what I think, but maybe not what I said
i highly doubt that's what you were thinking, but i'm already leaning out the window a bit too much for my own liking
Anonymous

Yeah, I agree, Winetricks is here as a palliative way of adding non open source implemented DLLs and redistribuables... However, this piece of software exists only because Wine's development wasn't as fast before... Now, about 30% of entries in it can be removed, as it's already integrated
Eris
then again, wine does not only do NT calls as you infamously claimed before, it does a lot more you dont really get to see
Stas'M
ntdll APIs yes, but not syscalls
Stas'M
So every Win32 app which uses syscalls directly will fail in Wine 😅
Stas'M
(that's how ReactOS is better than Wine)
Anonymous

Some of them will obviously work, but getting weird errors or apps that doesn't start up is an obvious thing !
Eris
Wine doesn't implement NT syscalls afaik
yeah, wanted to rectify that statement but didnt have much time left, learned something today
Jose
Free editors so use whatever you have or like to use
Mark
Wine doesn't implement NT syscalls afaik
Apps doing direct syscalls are almost always malicious so who cares
Mark
And wine has ntoskrnl nowadays
jamie@
And wine has ntoskrnl nowadays
some games need to load a “kernel” driver anyway
jamie@
* yes you can but it changes the whole time
jamie@
BSDs (and including XNU) do NOT have a stable syscall ABI
jamie@
Linux is one of the few exceptions to the general rule
Mark
Skype did it for some time 😅
This does not invalidate what I said

Hey back everyone !
Budjang
Anyone know this theme? Seem's good
Anonymous
The modern theme is shit/10. Releasing it to 0.4.10 was such a bad move. The taskbar looks off, so does the white tone, should be a little bit darker, a very soft grey would be good (parameter set to Black wtf) Everything is broken af in this thing
Budjang
B-but...
Anonymous
or, another option which is doable: just dont use it
Why integrating shit stuff in an OS that's trying to be good ?
Anonymous
Doing a poll here would reveal that everyone hates the modern theme
Eris
and that's where you are so wrong
