As I said - you need to have something in your resume that will interest an employer. The selection is usually done automatically, because large companies have thousands of CVs. The filter is usually degrees, grades, education. Only after that human, usually HR that are not engineers, read and select some and only after that they reach actual team that wants to hire. Good luck with getting a good job without formal education.

And having certificate doesn't necessarily mean you can apply what you've "learned".
Having projects or contributing to OS projects is more effective, I think.
Actually I think it depends on country, culture, company culture etc.
Because I've had few interviews, I write a good CV explaining what I've done so far including my personal projects, contributions, and "jobs as freelancer" and they asked me a few questions then got accepted.
