But Byte is 8 bit
Go back 55 years ago and you had computers with 7bit bytes
Ludovic 'Archivist'
Which is why ASCII is defined over 7 bits and not 8

thanks

I have a short, but slightly off-topic question, I hope it's not too big of a deal.
Are parsing and web scraping considered signal processing?
Mat
Ludovic 'Archivist'
But now it's pretty standard 🤷♂
Well, you'll know that ECC RAM have 12bits of hardware bits per bytes for error codes. It is not standard, it is just the way some very common CPU architecture use, for example x86 and its variant x86_64, and ARM architecures
Ludovic 'Archivist'
It have no standard definition.
Ludovic 'Archivist'
actually, byte being dependent on the character size, you could argue that even x86 in a country using 16 bit character sets like Japan should be considered to have a byte side of 16 bits
Ludovic 'Archivist'
And it would still match C and C++ definition of it, all 16bit words being addressable and allowing unsigned values between 0 and 255
Mat
@QNeko you're definitely right

There is a character Array of 20 size. You have to set 102 bit.
how to do that?
Ludovic 'Archivist'
Anonymous
wha what?
Anonymous
102 bit is strange. how to set them?
Ludovic 'Archivist'
wha what?
I typed enter by mistake, fixed
Anonymous
kindly explain.
1<<7 becomes 8 bits and then...?
Ludovic 'Archivist'
assuming big endian
Anonymous
But the question was to do with char array.
char arr[20] . set 102nd bit
Anonymous
wait it is set 102 bit
Ludovic 'Archivist'
Ludovic 'Archivist'
Anonymous
first fill the first 102/8 bytes and then set the 102%8 = bits
Anonymous
setting 6 bits = (1<<7) - 1
Anonymous
isn't it?
Ludovic 'Archivist'
What I gave you was to set the bit 102, I leave to you the exercise of setting all bits from 0 to 102
