In the unix-world, stack is important, in the minix-world, its register based; Linux calls are usually register based, however, they're only moving away from it due to other platforms not always supporting register-based, not due to unix compatibility
Badugar
Wim
yes
Badugar
Which architectures are said ones ?
Wim
To be honest, I only heared there are, I've never seen it not using registers but then again I mostly work on ARM/Intel
Badugar
At least i know that all RISC ones, and x86 are basically register based, although PowerPC/POWER works with a Load-store model.
Badugar
Imagine owning a POWER-based machine, every time you start it, you can shout "More Power !" xD
Wim
😂
Badugar
Contrary to x86, where you'd shout "More extensions ! More special registers !"
Wim
And more design fuckups! 😂
Badugar
One interesting thing about non-x86 arches : All of them designed after the Intel 8008(?) could avoid the design fails that x86 made. Like PowerPC, ARM, SPARC, Alpha, Itanium etc.
Wim
Funny thing though is that intel didn't even design the architecture, it only expanded it
Badugar
So no Meltdown, Spectre, Zombieload etc. on PowerPC e.g.
But back to the theme of the group : Is it right to say that static in front of a variable makes it "live" throughout the whole runtime of a program ?
Wim
Especially on the X86 series where they began to move to both 16 bits and start adding opcodes to optimise for higher-level languages
Badugar
Wim
Its still the design that went into the 4004 but heavily upgraded and that was designed by the customer, not intel, they only needed to implement it
Wim
appearantly TI did too but they screwed up and couldn't get it to work
Wim
For originality I do like the MOTD/MOS team better
Wim
(Hey! Isn't that what PPC was eventually based upon as well? 😂)

Also .. the registers of a modern x86-CPU, eax, ebx, ecx and such can be adressed in 64, 32, 16 and 8 bit. Like al, ah, bl, bh, cl, ch and such. Strange.
Badugar
Wim
Motorola and MOS?
Wim
The 6800 design team collectively quit motorola and joined MOS to design the 6500, which is pretty similar in architecture because its the same design team?
Badugar
Don't know anything about that

Hi.
Can anyone tell me..
Why am I not allowed to"click here to prove you're human" button..m
Riccardo
Cause you aren't a human
Wim
It sucked for me too, the rules button however, opened a private chat with Rose so I had an instant relationship crisis because my GF thought I was cheating on her with some girl called Rose

Ludovic 'Archivist'
C++/CLR ?
An MS thingy that is a superset of C++ that can run on the common language runtime
Ludovic 'Archivist'
but you can
Not in C# (well you can only for primitive type, never for objects to be accurate)
Badugar
Dima
Oh it’s stackalloc keyword https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/csharp/language-reference/keywords/stackalloc
But yeah, not for a reference based objects.
