In an expression, for int a[] = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6};, a would decay to int*, &a would decay to int (*)[6]

Eventually he'll know that

Pointers are little bit confusing for beginners
So the explanation is perfect for him
Neon
MᏫᎻᎯᎷᎷᎬᎠ
You don't wanna tell him about function pointers right now

Yeah that's true, only to be clear

Then y don't u explain

What is pointer..

Explore the whole topic
S.
pointer is a variable to store "address"

What I have explained

Neon
See that.. is there anything else that everybody is saying more more

But for a beginner this explaination fits, lunatic is right.

Imagine your hand to be the pointer - when you point towards an object like a cup or a book, then that direction in which you point your hand can be considered to be the address of that object.
I'm a beginner myself, but this is what I've made of it.
In a slightly freakish manner, you can also imagine that the pointer can "indicate" values of the object - if you think of the object to be 1, then you can show the value "1" with your fingers on the hand.
Forgive me for the crude method of explaining it.

#include<stdio.h>
int main()
{
char *s[] = { "knowledge","is","power"};
char **p;
p = s;
printf("%s ", ++*p);
printf("%s ", *p++);
printf("%s ", ++*p);
//getchar();
return 0;
}
how the printf statement works in above case???

I think
MᏫᎻᎯᎷᎷᎬᎠ
One will not understand pointers completely until they know there uses in practical
Like
When you tell a beginner that it points to an address
If they weren't super smart, they'll be confused
Like "yeah points to an address, then what?"
Anonymous
Yeah

MᏫᎻᎯᎷᎷᎬᎠ
And the picture get clear
MᏫᎻᎯᎷᎷᎬᎠ
He'll probably test passing a variable by value to the function
Talula
Pointers are something you understand perfectly if you know assembly code.
