I always recommend trying the official DE of Fedora - it will yield the fewest bugs and problems. ^^ And gnome has become really, really good. The initial hate it had is now truly undeserved.

Depends on the email client. I like Thunderbird filters, but I just use the mailing list email address for filtering.

On Fedora mailing lists, the common courtesy is like other projects, like replying at the bottom of an email thread (or replying in-line). Although, obviously not everyone does this. I prefer plaintext on mailing lists because sometimes people with HTML emails have things embedded or their preferences actually makes it hard to read (with plaintext, it's formatted with my preferences).

But yeah, I had hundreds of emails waiting on queue and then was the moment when I realised that 1) I'm trying too much, better restrict myself to very few things I know I can cope with. 2) If I don't read within a day, it's unlikely I'll ever read it. Better delete than gathering trash.
